Alice Maud Mary Moss was born on 24th April 1869 at Aley Green in the part of the parish of Caddington which at that time was in Hertfordshire. She was the daughter of a bonnet sewer called Bethia Moss, formerly King, and her husband William Moss, an agricultural labourer. Alice appears in both the 1871 and 1881 censuses living with her parents and siblings at Aley Green.

By the time of the 1891 census the family had moved to the nearby town of Luton, where they lived at 146 Chapel Street, and Alice worked as a hat sewer. Later that year, Alice had a son, Sidney Arthur Moss. On 14th December 1891, aged 22, Alice married Richard Smith in Luton. Alice's son Sidney adopted Richard's surname for his childhood, appearing in the censuses as Smith, but as an adult he reverted to using the name Moss, which may indicate that Sidney did not believe Richard to be his actual father. Alice and Richard went on to have another five children in Luton between 1894 and 1913, although at least two died as infants. Alice's mother died in 1906 and her father died in 1911.

Alice and Richard settled at 48 New Town Street in Luton. They appear there in both the 1901 and 1911 censuses. Alice continued to work as a hat manufacturer. By 1911 Richard was working as a decorator. Their daughter May died in 1917 aged 16.

Richard died in 1924, aged 57. Alice survived him by about 35 years. At the outbreak of the Second World War she was living with her daughter Lily and Lily's husband, Albert Phillips. They were still at 48 New Town Street.

Alice died in 1959, aged 90.
