Alice Halford was baptised on 2nd September 1778 at Witham on the Hill in Lincolnshire, England, daughter of William and Elizabeth Halford. The family lived at Toft, a hamlet just east of Witham.

In 1807, Alice married Edward Newborn, a gardener from Barnack, a few miles south of Toft. It has yet to be established where they married, but their marriage licence describes Alice as living in the parish of Braceborough at the time.

Between 1808 and 1819 they had five children. The first three, between 1808 and 1812, were baptised at Barnack. They then moved to Thurlby by Bourne in Lincolnshire, just east of Alice's native Toft, where the younger two children were baptised in 1816 and 1819.

By the 1841 census they had settled back in Barnack, where Edward worked as a gardener. In the 1841 census Alice's sister Sarah was living with them.

Edward died in 1853, aged 70.

After Edward's death Alice lived with her son Edward and later with her daughter Charlotte. She lived to be 97 years old and died at Barnack on 4th April 1876.

    Baptisms in 1778
    Alice D[aughte]r of W[illia]m & Eliz[abe]th Halford Toft Sep[tembe]r 2d

This baptism has been linked to the Alice Halford who married Edward Newborn on the basis that it is at about the time implied by the age she quoted as an adult in the censuses, and in the parish (Witham) and of the hamlet (Toft) which she quoted as her place of birth. Moreover, in the 1841 census she had a Sarah Halford living with her, and the Alice baptised in 1778 has a younger sister called Sarah baptised in 1784.
