Alice Mary Ann Guess was born on 31st January 1874 at Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire, daughter of Mary Ann Guess, formerly Scrivener, and her husband George Guess, an agricultural labourer. The 1881 census finds Alice living with her parents at siblings at Brickhill Road in Leighton Buzzard. In 1891 the family was living at Plantation Road in the town.

In 1893, aged about 19, Alice married Frederick Kempson, a straw hat packer. They married in Frederick's home town of Luton, which is also where they settled after their marriage, although one of their children was born in Leighton Buzzard rather than Luton.

The 1901 and 1911 censuses find Alice living at addresses in the southern suburbs of Luton with her husband and children. She reported in 1911 that she had had seven children, but two had died. After the 1911 census she appears to have had two more children. The address she was at in 1911 was 47 Cambridge Street, which was to be her home for the rest of her life.

Alice died in Luton on 2nd February 1949, two days after her 75th birthday. Frederick outlived her by just under five years.
