Alice and her sister appear to have been illegitimate. The 1901 English census lists May Dodson, aged 22, (living with her mother Abigail and her step-father Henry Russell) and her children, Alice Dodson (2) and Maud Dodson (11 months). May Dodson didn't marry Roger Ayliff until the latter half of 1901.

In the 1911 England & Wales Census Alice and her sister Maud are still recorded as Dodson, and their mother has married Edward Critcher.

At the time of her marriage to Alexander Pedofsky in 1917, Alice was residing in Molesey Road, Hersham, Surrey, England. On her marriage certificate Alice records her surname as Ayliff and lists her father as Roger Ayliff (deceased).
