I am well and personally acquainted with Claimant Cassandra W Whitehead mother of Alfred D Whitehead deced. Late of Co. G. 8th Ky. Cav. I knew Claimant in 1862 and for more than three years prior to siad time. I know that for three years prior to and in 1862 at the time said soldier went into said war Claimant was in fact dependant on her said son for her support. Her said son during said time worked on the farm and his work and labor went to the support of Claimant and her family. I knew Claimants husband during said time and up to his death which occurred about 1883. Her said husband during all of said time was not a stout man physically, and the family was during all of said time was at a great expense in paying doctor bills, and was during all of said time in debt. My reasons for knowing that claimant was in 1862 and for more than three years prior to said time in part dependent on her son for support are

{Page 6:} that I was personally acquainted with the family and know that her said son was the only boy at that time able to work on the farm, her husband not being able to work of any consequence. I was at the time in merchantile business in Rome Indiana and the family did the most of their trading with me and was most always behind with their store bill. State of Indiana County of Perry SS: On this 21 day of March AD 1890 personally appeared before me a Justice of the peace in and for said county and state Cassandra W Whitehead claimant, who being duly sworn according to law upon her oath deposes as follows to wit. In 1862 I resided in Perry County in the State of Indiana, in the vicinty of the town of Rome. My post office address was at that time and is at the present time Rome, Perry County, Indiana. In 1862 the members of my family and their ages were as follows Isaac Whitehead my husband was 46 years of age in 1862. He was unable to do manual labor of any consequence. He had been physically weak for several years, and continued so up to his death which occurred November 18th 1883. His disability {inserted} in 1862 and for some years there after was sore eyes {end insertion} consisted mainly of Stricture of the Urethrea. He was not able to make a living at his trade (Plastering) and was not able to tend his land.

{Page 17:} The other members of my family and ages in 1862 were as follows - Alfred D. Whitehead was 22 years old. Sarah E " " 18 " ". Israel L " " 13 " ". Chas. N. " " 10 " ". Preston E. " " 9 " " . Louis C. " " 5 " ". Nora G. " " 2 " " . My second son Israel L. was a cripple from his ninth year. {marked out: all his life} In 1862 I had a son William A. he was at that time married and doing for himself and enlisted in the war at the same time, with my son Alfred D. Since 1888 the following members of my family are still living. William A. aged 48 years and living in Kentury trying to support his family. Sarah E. aged 46 years, long since married. Israel L. aged 41 years, a cripple and trying to support his own family. Charles N. aged 38 years unmarried and living away from me. {marked out: long since married} Preston E. aged 37 years, marreid now a widower and now

{Page 18:} living with me. {marked out:living with his family} Louis C. aged 30 years who married some time ago. Nora G. aged 30 years and who has been married for some time. Evert aged 27 years who has been married for some time. Thus leaving me entirely alone, except my youngest son and Edgar P. at present living with me and his family are now living with me, but they expect to leave me so to work for their support, and I will live about among my children the best I can - until death takes me away. My son Alfred D. was never married, hence he left no widow or child or children behind him when he died in the army. In 1862 my husband owned 313 acres of land valued at about $4.26 per acre - and the whole lot had but $370 improvement on it. I do not now remember the value of our personal property at that time, but it was not much, just about what we could barely make out with.

{Page 19:} The land in character was very {illegible} - situate back from the Ohio River, away from the botom land - part of the land consisted of hills, and part of a wet creek botom, none of which was first class productive land - and in 1862 there was a school fund mortgage of $300 on said land. After which we had to sell part of the land to aid us in paying off the incumbrance. Since 1888, I have left me a third interest in 108 acres, valued in all at $325, with $75 worth of improvement on same - and I have no personal property worth mentioning. In 1862 my husband had no regular income, he made what he was able to by plastering when he was able to work, and when he could get a job to do, but his income from all sources, was not sufficient to pay his, mine, and our family's doctors and store bills and my son Alfred cultivated the land. We had at time avout 40 acres under cultivation.

{Page 20:} What my husbands work, and income lacked to support us was supplied by the work and labor of my son Alfred D. as he was a good boy and worked dilligently on the farm to aid in my support, until he was taken away from me by the war. Since 1888 I have made my support with what I can make out of my one third of the little farm we have left us, and through the aid of my sons and daughters, and their husbands and wives. I have not re-married since the death of my said husband, but have remained his widow. {signed} Cassandra W Whitehead
