Mother died when 4 yrs went to live with Uncle Jacob Hoover until 1844. accompanied his father to Fayette PA where he worked in tanyard until 1846. 1846 family took farm and Alfred remained there until Mar 1852 when he accompanied family to Dallas Co., Iowa continued at home until 1857, attained majority and started own life. during summer worked for Dr. Barick Mitchner in winter seasons attended school until 1859
