Alfred Floyd was born on 26th August 1860 at Princes Risborough in Buckinghamshire, son of Mary Floyd, formerly Crook, and her husband James Floyd, a nurseryman. Alfred appears in both the 1861 and 1871 censuses living with his parents and siblings in Princes Risborough.
On 25th July 1885, aged 24, Alfred married Fanny Sulston. She was also from Princes Risborough, but they married at Southwark in the southern suburbs of London. After their marriage they moved around the area surrounding London, having two children born at Bromley in Kent in 1886 and 1887, then a daughter born in Lewisham in 1890. The 1891 census finds the family living at 5 Mallet Road in Lewisham, with Alfred working as a nursery gardener.
They then moved to Cheshunt in Hertfordshire, where their youngest daughter was born in 1892. Fanny died either giving birth or shortly afterwards - she died on 28th December 1892, aged about 34, whilst her daughter's birth was not registered until early in 1893.
After Fanny's death, Alfred and the children moved to Farnborough in Kent. On 18th November 1895 Alfred married Annie Singleton there. They went on to have another three children between 1896 and 1905. The first two were born at Farnborough, where the family appears in the 1901 census, living at 2 Wellbrook Road, with Alfred described as a "florist (grower)". Some time between 1901 and 1905 the family moved to Uxbridge in Middlesex, where their youngest son was born. They would remain in Uxbridge for the rest of their lives.
The 1911 census finds the family living at 8 St Peter's Villas on Villier Street in Uxbridge. Alfred appears to have run a nursery business growing plants from Villier Street for the rest of his working life.
At the outbreak of the Second World War, Alfred and Annie were living at 15 Partridge Villas on Cricket Field Road, just south of the town centre. By this time he was described as retired.
Annie died on 4th January 1946, aged 83. Alfred was already severely ill himself when she died, and he died just fourteen days later, on 18th January 1946 in Uxbridge. He was 85. His obituary describes how he was well-known and respected in the town, and lists his various children and grandchildren.
