For some reason this Alexandre Ferriolle appears to be a late comer who probably stayed in New France after his military service.(A number or French soldiers did after the defeat) Here is what Dictionaire Tanguay states; married 20 April 1761 in Montréal. Alexandre Ferriol born 1735 son of Jean and Claudine Bonsard de la ville de Dié, Dauphiné. Married Marie-Apolline Mailhot (look for Maillot as well) daughter of Joseph & Marie-Jeanne Provost. His military service could be the reason for his being with the Americans and anti-British in 1775. Will have to find more on this chap and wether he came back to Lower Canada. I checked and found no forum dealng with that name

"Others became Protestant. Alexander Ferriole Jr., who had followed his father's footsteps in to,the army, is later found on the rolls of the French Baptist church at Chazy, N.Y." It is believed that Lt. Alexandre Ferriol (Ferreol, Ferryall), came to the New World with Marquis de Montcalm about 1755 for what is known as French & Indian War, or Seven Years War. However, it is possible his family migrated to Canada much earlier. Files in Montreal refer to him as Alexandre Ferriol dit LaGrenade, presumably in reference to his military career. He fought in the American Revolution under Col. Moses Hazens in the Canadian & Nova Scotian Refugee unit. This unit was composed of Canadians sympathetic to the cause of the the 13 colonies. They were treated as outlaws by the British and had become in name & in fact, "Refugees". He had left Canada with retreating American forces under Gen. Sullivan on June 17, 1776, and after the Revolution, he settled on a Revolutionary War government grant in Chazy, Clinton Cty, NY where the surname became Ferryall. These land grants were a long time coming to the Canadians who fought and then stayed in the new United States. The family was probably originally of the Catholic faith, but in May 1775, an edict by the Bishop of Quebec, banned from the Catholic Church, any Canadians who joined the American forces. Thus the descendants of Alexander in New York are known to have been Protestant. Two of his sons, Privates Alexander (Jean-Baptiste) and Joseph (Jacques) also served in the Refugee unit, the latter as drummer-boy then as Private. Joseph also settled in New York.
