All children were born on the family plantation known as Walnut Hill. It was located in Shelby County Kentucky near Shelbyville. It consisted of one section of land.

Alexander was listed in the Jessamine County Tax Lists for 1806-1815. No land was listed for him except that in the two years 1815 and 1816, his land holdings were listed as 110 acres. That appears to be one half of the land that had previously been and afterwards was listed for Joseph Thompson. Alexander was not listed in Jessamine County from 1817 onward. According to one of his decendents, he married in 1819 and took his new bride back to his plantation in Shelby County. Based on the tax lists, it appears that he moved to Shelby County about 1817.
