Alexander served in the Spanish-American War of 1898 in Co. L of the 52nd Regiment, Iowa Infantry Volunteers from June 28, 1898 to Oct 30, 1898. His statement according to his Application of Recognition as a Veteran stated, "Due to a fall while drilling I was ruptured on my right side two weeks before I was discarged, and that I am still suffering from the said rupture, which at times is so painful tht I am unableto do any work, and at times scarcely able to walk. That while at camp at Chicamaugua, Georgia, I was stricken with dysentery which has left me in such a condtion that at times I do not have full control of my bowels."
