'In 1732 Alexander Shafer, who was born in 1711, emigrated from the Palatinate, Germany, to America, and settled in Lancaster County, Pa., where he ultimately became the owner of 1800 acres of land. He founded Shaferstown, Lebanon County, Pa. in 1745. His only son, John Shafer, was a successful and prominent farmer in that section and was the father of five children.' - A History of Washington County, Maryland
