It looks highly likely that Alexander, son of John and Susan (DONALDSON), is both the father of Alexander (mother Jane HEPBURN), abt 1831, and the one who married Isabella DOW in 1842. Evidence for this identification is primarily the blacksmith occupation on the dth cert for the latter Alexander, and on the 2nd marriage cert. of the son Alexander. Associated places do not overlap, but are close by. However there are no obvious family interconnections over time, which may mean a complete misidentification. Although, how many Alexander RUNCIMAN blacksmiths of an age in the area? Alexander Snr does not seem to have considered himself a blacksmith later in life, with most census, and some BDM certs, showing him as a farm labourer instead.

See Alexander's page in the RUNCIMAN Surname One Name Study, particularly the request for a direct male line descendants to represent both lines of descent from Alexander in the RUNCIMAN Surname DNA project, ie one from each partner, to confirm the theory that they belong to one and the same Alexander.
