Will of Alexander Ramsey

I, Alexander Ramsey of the county of Hopkins and state of Kentucky knowing the uncertainty of all human affairs do make and publish this as my last Will and Testament
1st I desire that all my just debts shall be paid
2nd Having heretofore given to my son in law Green Oakley a portion of my estate I now give him five dollars as his interest in my estate
3rd I give to my three grand children towit Mary E. Oakley Alexander Oakley and Lucinda Oakley children of said Green Oakley and his wife Elizabeth now deceased one hundred and fifty dollars to be equally divided and paid over to them upon their marriage or arrival to the age of twenty one years and should either of said children die before marriage or their arrival to the age of twenty one years that then the money is to go to the survivors of said children
4th I give to my three single daughters Parthula Bethany and Lucinda one hundred dollars each to be paid to them upon their marriage or arrival to the age of twenty one years to make them equal to advancements made to my daughters Margaret Jane Chandler wife of James Chandler Mary A. Crowley wife of Prior Crowley and Sarah Crowley wife of Squire Crowley
5th I give to my two sons James and John three hundred and fifty dollars each to make them equal to the amount advanced to my son Andrew having given to said Andrew one horse saddle and bridle cattle hogs sheep and which I estimate at three hundred and fifty dollars
6th In addition to what I have herein mentioned to give to my daughter Lucinda one hundred dollars in compliance with a request made by the mother of said Lucinda just before her death
7th It is my desire that my son in law James Chandler take control of and educate my son James and daughter Lucinda and that he be allowed what is reasonable for educating and clothing said children out of what is herein willed to them that my son Andrew take care and control of my daughter Bethany until she marries or arrives to the age of twenty one years and that he be allowed for his trouble reasonable compensation out of what is herein willed to her and that my brother James K. Ramsey take my son John raise and educate him and see that he is put to some good trade the black smith and wagon making I think will just him but I leave that to my said brother and desire that he shall be paid for his trouble and expense out of what is herein willed to said John I desire further that my said brother take charge of my daughter Parthula until she marries or arrives to the age of twenty one years and that he be paid for his trouble out of what is herein willed to her
8th I desire that all of my property after my death shall be sold and that after the payment of my debts and the bequest herein made I desire that the remainder shall be equally divided between Andrew Ramsey, Margaret J. Chandler, Mary A. Crowley, Sarah Crowley, Parthula Ramsey, Bethany Ramsey, James Ramsey, John Ramsey and Lucinda Ramsey my children as they severally arrive to the age of twenty one years or marry and should any of my said children die before marriage or their arrival to the age of twenty one years then the survivors of my said children are to have their portion or portions
9 I desire my personal property sold on a credit of twelve months and my land and n....
I desire shall be sold on a credit of one and two years 10
I hereby constitute and appoint my said brother James K. Ramsey my executor of this my last Will and Testament and I give him a controlling power over the education and control of all of my children and power to change the arrangements as herein made at any time he may see proper hereby revoking all other wills In witness whereof I have hereto set my hand and seal this the 20th day of November 1856.

He was the a first cousin of James Laird Jr., their mothers being sisters and also a third cousin to Louisa Lonie (Givens) (Laird) Ramsey. They lived near Providence, KY., in the part of hopkins Co. that became Webster Co. in 1860.
