Alexander had come to this country from Clunie, Scotland, with the Black Watch in 1901, but had just missed taking part in the Boer War. He obtained his discharge in South Africa, and became farm manager for William Scott who was a trader in Mafeteng, but owned the farm, "Rohallion" just north of Wepener. After their marriage Alex too went in for trading working first for Fraser's Ltd. of Wepener, at a trading station called Tsita's Nek, near Mefeteng. Circa 1921, Alex transferred to Matelile, and then, in 1926, to Mount Morosi (Quthing area) where he took over Mount Morosi, Madibe's and Mauvaes trading stations. However, the tragic drought and depression of 1930/33 hit them very hard, and the three stations had to be handed back to Fraser's Ltd. Alex started again from scratch, with the stations. Alwyns Kop and Masitise, and this time was so successful that when he died in February, 1941, he had left his sons not only the legacy of higher education, but invaluable experience in
