!REF:from notes of Carol Haas--From The Genealogy of Cleveland & Cleaveland Families: "Alexander" was born either in England or in VA about 1659, d at the plantation of his son, John on Blue Run in Orange Co. Va ca 1770 within 3 days of the death of his wife at the age of 111 yrs.

However, this Genealogy forcuses on Moses Cleveland, who founded the northern Cleaveland line which includes Pres. Grover Cleveland. The information on the Cleveland Line that she chose to follow is from The Long Journey, A Family History 1687-1991 by Thomas Lee Hair which lists sources which are Minutes of the Council & General Court of Colonial VA, Vol 58, pg 254, VA State Library, Richmond; Spottsylvania VA Records by Crozier, p 17, lib of Congress; Abingdon Parish Register, Gloucester Co, VA 1678-1761, VA State Lib, VA, Richmond, births, baptisms, marriages & deaths, ps 8,11,19,37,40,45,54; Life & Address of W H Woolery, LLD1, Cincinnati, The Std Publishing Co., 1893, ps 10-39

James Cleveland purports that an Alexander Cleveland b in England in 1617 married a daug of Lord & Lady Axminster. He settled in Prince William Co, VA & was the father of our Alexander. No proof is given. However, the sources above clearly support a Roger Cleveland as being the first Cleveland in VA. He arrived before 16 Nov 1670. He married either in Eng or VA a lady named Dorcas (last name unknown). He signed a deed in 1679 in Gloucester Co, VA. He later moved to that part of Spottsylvania Co which later became, in 1734, Orange Co. Sources above contain births, baptisms, some marriages & some death records of the known children of Roger & Dorcas.

THIS ALEXANDER:On Feb 7, 1733, Alexander Cleveland witnessed a deed from Sam Hutcherson of St. George's Parish, Spottsylvania Co. to Rice Curtis of same. VA Deed Book B 1729-1734. On May 20, 1735, Rice Curtis Sr., of Spottsylvania Co. converyed 600 acres on both sides of "Blew Run" on the Hanover Co. line to Thomas Chew of Orange Co., St. Mark's Parish, adjoining land of John Minor & Alexander Cleveland, part of a 1600 acre patent to Chew, sold to Curtis & repossessed. Alexander of Spottsylvania Co, in Sept 1738, bought 100 acres from Laurence Franklin of Orange Co. On the same day John Cleveland bought 100 acres from Rice Curtis on branches of "Blew Run" adjoining Alexander. It was witnessed by Grace Cleveland, daug of Alexander, who probably married Edward Coffey, son of Edward and Ann Powell Coffey. On May 27, 1743, Alexander Cleveland having petitioned for a road, it was ordered that Alexander Cleveland, Benjamin Franklin, Edward Coffee & others under Laurence Franklin, clear the road (James Madison, father of the future president, became road overseer from Blue Run Mill Road to the main road below Col. Chew on Mar 22, 1749).
