When Alexander L. Butler died he was visiting his son, W. O. Butler, in Kilgore, TX. His body was brought to Greenville for funeral in Walnut Street Church of Christ and burial in Mount Zion Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. He was laid to rest beside his first wife, the mother of all of his children. There may be a discrepancy in the place of his birth. The 1850 Census Record of Richmond County, North Carolina, shows Alexander Butler, age 2, born North Carolina, living in the household of his grandfather, Edward Butler. His tombstone is inscribed "Born in Spartanburg District, South Carolina." His mother gave his birthplace as North Carolina in 21850. He gave the birthplace of his parents and himself as North Carolina on the 1880 Census of Butler County.
