Stevens, 78, of 120 Raleigh Court, Danville, died Tue, June 13, 2006, at his residence. He was born March 9, 1928, in Madison Co. son of the late William Campbell and Louise Turpin Stevens. He was an educator, teacher, coach and principal . He graduated from Forkland High School in 1946 and earned his B.S. at Eastern Kentucky University in 1950 and his Masters in 1952. He coached and taught social studies at Owen Co. High School, and served in the US Marine Corps earning the rank of Captain. During the 1950s and 1960s, Mr. Stevens farmed and owned an interest in the Bun Boy restaurant. He coached basketball and taught social studies at Winchester High School; was basketball coach and social studies teacher at Danville High School; was basketball coach at Centre College; principal, Lebanon High School; principal at Crab Orchard Elementary in Lincoln Co.; assistant principal and principal at Bate Middle School. He retired from education the first time in 1984. He was owner and principal broker of Stevens-McAnly Real Estate Co. He entered education again as assistant principal then principal of Boyle County Middle School. He also served in three elective positions, on the Danville Board of Education from 1988- 91; the Danville City Commission from 1994 - 98 and as Mayor of Danville from 1998 to 2002. He was a member and past president of the Danville Kiwanis Club and past president of the Kentucky Middle School Association. Mr. Stevens was a member of First Christian Church of Danville where he taught a Sunday School Class for 40 years and served as Elder and Chairman of the Administrative Board. He is survived by his wife, PDS, Danville; a son and daughter-in-law, JS and LS, Danville; a daughter and son-in-law, AS and VS, Dayton, OH, two step-sons, DN (JN) , Chapel Hill, NC and TPN, Minneapolis, Minn.; two step-daughters and their husbands, C and LN L, Hamilton, Ohio and A and M R G, Chapel Hill, NC; 6 grandchildren and 1 step-grandson. The funeral service will be 11 am, Saturday, at First Christian Church, Danville with Rev. J S and Rev. Q S officiating. Burial will be in Bellevue Cemetery. Pallbearers will be J S, C S, L S, S S, V S, D N, T N, and M G. Honorary pallbearers will be the Garnett Pearce Sunday School Class. Visitation will be after 4 pm, Friday at First Christian Church. The family requests memorial donations be sent to First Christian Church, The Forkland Community Center, or the Danville-Boyle Co. Public Library. Stith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.[3] |
