Lockhart WV was named for Albert who built the first store there, and established the first post office in 1866. 1870 built the first school in the village which at that time was located where Nesselroad Creek meets Sand Creek. 1889 flood destroyed his store and many homes, the sign for the town was moved up the road to where Buttermilk village was located. A school teacher and in the timber business, his three sons followed suit. He died from injuries while lifting on a saw mill
Funeral services for John W. LOCKHART, 75 years old, were held at the Sheppards Chapel church on Wednesday at 2 o'clock and burial was in the LOCKHART cemetery. Mr. LOCKHART, who taught school for more than forty years, died at his home early Monday morning after a three month illness caused by a heart ailment.
He was a native of Jackson County, a son of Albert and Anetta LOCKHART. He had been a member of the Sheppards Chapel Methodist church for many years. On April 4, 1894, he married Miss Mary YATES, who with the following children survive: Lucy PINGLEY, of Mill Creek, WV.; Katherine WRIGHT, of West Union, WV.; Enetta MORRIS, of Parkersburg, WV.; Beulah PARSONS, of Kimball; Noel H. LOCKHART, of Windy; Bryan J. LOCKHART, of Palestine, WV.; Burhl R. LOCKHART, of Baltimore, and John W. LOCKHART, Jr., of Parkersburg. One son, Tony LOCKHART, was killed in World War I and another son and daughter preceded him in death. Also surviving are 25 grandchildren, one great grandchild and the following brothers and sisters: G. N. LOCKHART, Mrs. J. W. VANNOY, Mrs. Tina SOMERVILLE and Mrs. J. W. ARCHER, all of Sandyville; Mrs. Ida DICKINSON, of East Liverpool, Ohio, and Mrs. Frank LEEP of Parkersburg, WV. (Jackson Herald, Fri., 28 Aug 1942)
John W. LOCKHART, son of Albert and Annetta LOCKHART, was born in Jackson County, WV., on March 13, 1867, died at his home at Windy, WV., on August 24, 1942, aged 75 years, 5 months and 11 days. He was united in marriage to Mattie ARCHER in October 1891. To this union one son was born, but mother and son both passed to the great beyond.
On April 4, 1894 he married Mary YATES. To this union 11 children were born. Claudie and Ida died quite young and Tony gave his life for his country in 1918 during WW I. His wife and the following children still survive: Mrs. Lucy PINGLEY, of Mill Creek; Noel and Bryan LOCKHART, of Windy, WV.; Mrs. Katherine WRIGHT, of West Union, WV.; Mrs. Mettie MORRIS and John W. LOCKHART, Jr., of Parkersburg, WV; Beryl LOCKHART, of Baltimore, Maryland, and Mrs. Beulah PARSONS, of Kimball, WV. Also one brother, G. N. LOCKHART, of Sandyville and the following sisters, Mrs. Tena SOMERVILLE, WV; Mrs. Sarah ARCHER, and Mrs. Sarah VAN NOY (?), of Sandyville, WV; Mrs. Ida DICKSON, of East Liverpool, Ohio; and Mrs. Lillie LEEP, of Parkersburg, WV, and 26 grandchildren and one great grandchild. In memory of John Wesley LOCKHART, son of Albert and Annetta LOCKHART, born in Jackson County, March 13, 1867, and departed this life August 24, 1942, aged 75 years, 5 months and 11 days. Death was due to a complication of maladies.
He was united in marriage to Hattie L. ARCHER on October 4, 1890, and to this union a son was born that July 4, 1891. The mother died the same day. On April 4, 1894, he was united in marriage to Mary Ellen YATES and to this union eleven children were born, three of which are deceased, Tona, Claude and Ida. The wife, the following children survive: Mrs. Lucy PINGLEY, Mill Creek, WV.; Noel LOCKHART, Windy, WV; Mrs. Katherine WRIGHT, West Union, WV.; Mrs. Annetta MORRIS, Parkersburg, WV.; Bryan LOCKHART, Palestine, WV; Beryl LOCKHART, Baltimore, Md.; John W. LOCKHART, Jr., Parkersburg, WV; and Mrs. Beulah PARSONS, of Kimball, WV. One brother, G. N. LOCKHART, Sandyville, WV.; and the following sisters, Mrs. Christena SOMERVILLE, Mrs. Sarah ARCHER, and Mrs. Anetta VANNOY, of Sandyville, WV.; Mrs. Ida DICKSON, East Liverpool, Ohio; and Mrs. Lilla LEYS, of Parkersburg, WV.
He was laid to rest in the LOCKHART family cemetery. Funeral was directed by Undertaker Lawrence FORD, with Rev. STATES officiating, assisted by Revs. SOMERVILLE and CALTRIDER. Pallbearers were; J. H. TONCRAY, Okey SMITH, Everette MOORE, Albert BOWER, C. A. MCPHERSON and Vincent OTT. Flower girls were; Izetta, Mary Ruth and Elizabeth LOCKHART, Joanne LOCKHART, Betty Lou LOCKHART, and Pauline MOORE. (Jackson Herald, Fri., 2 Oct 1942) |
