Grew up in the McLaughlin area and attended Little Hertel school northeast of McLaughlin. He was confirmed July 10, 1927 at Selby, SD.

Made their home for the first 6 months of his marriage with his parents. They moved to a farm 10 miles NE of McLaughlin, where they lived until 1943, when they moved to a farm seven miles SW of McLaughlin. This was their home until 1987, when they moved to Mobridge. She died in 1988 and he lived in Mobridge until July 1993 when he moved back to McLaughlin and lived in an apartment until his death.
