The following is a summary from various newspaper clippings found at Marguerite Hall's residence in Lachute, Quebec. The 7,000 ton S.S. Fort Boise and a crew of 40 was en route to France with a load of zinc concentrate when, on August 22, 1946, it struck a rock off St. Pierre and Miquelon. Weather does not appear to have been a factor. Salvage operations began on August 27 but a gale intervened and Captain H. W. McLean ordered all but himself and 3 others, one of whom was A. H. Hall, to lifeboats with instructions to reach St. Pierre, which they did. When it was obvious the ship would sink, the Captain, Hall and the other two took to a life raft. Two were thrown from the raft and washed ashore alive on a beach east of Henry Point - St. Pierre & Miquelon. Captain McLean and Hall were found dead floating in the sea near Little Columbus Shoal off St. Pierre. The S. S. Fort Boise was owned by the Montreal Shipping Company. A. H. Hall was on loan from the British Government. His funeral was at St. John the Divine church in Verdun, Rev. A. G. Elcome officiating. He had been married only 137 days. |
