    24 Jan. 1900:
    Maj. J. C. Bryant, who was an officer in the Third Kentucky in the Spanish-American war, died at Newport News, Va., on the 17th inst. Mr. Bryant was a brother-in-law of Mr. A. J. Jones, a native of this place, who died in 1884. Maj. Bryant was known to a great many citizens of Columbia, he having visited here several times while his sister now Mrs. Bessie Kelsay, was a resident of the place.
