(From "History and Program: Centennial Celebration of the First Evangelical Lutheran Salem Congregation, 1125 Huron St., Toledo, OH; January 17-21, 1942) "Pastor C. E. Bode, of Illinois, acccepted the call to serve Salem at a salary of $800.00. Shortly after he came, the congregation decided by unanimous vote to build a new church. Forty-one members at once subscribed $5,845.00. On September 10, 1871, the new church was dedicated. The entire cost was about $14,000 of which $9,000 was paid in cash. The church at that time numbered about 70 families ... Pastor Bode who had served the congregation for 6 years resigned in 1875 and Pastor G. Rausch succeeded him."
