- Adam May, Sr was born Abt. 1774 in Pa., and died Abt. 1835. He married Elizabeth Bott on Abt. 1790, daughter of Henry Bott.
Adam's birth date is an estimate. Adam bought and sold some land east of Port Republic in the late 1700s and very early 1800s. Four of Adam and Elizabeth's daughters gave birth to children out-of-wedlock (Savilla, Christina, Catherine Gertrude, and Sarah). Three other daughters (Mary, Elizabeth and Margaret) are verified. Mary married David Crickenberger. Elizabeth married John Blakely. There has been no record of a marriage for Margaret located to date. According to the 1820 census, there was another daughter born sometime after the 1810 census who has not been accounted for. Adam and Elizabeth had at least 6 known sons (John, Adam, Jr., Heinrich, Jacob, Daniel, and Samuel). They may have had two more sons (Michael and Joseph). The 1810 [HeritageQuest, p. 173] New Haven, Rockingham County, Va. census shows the following for Adam May, Sr.'s household: 2 males (under 10, Henry and Daniel), 2 males (10 - 15, Adam, Jr. and Jacob), 1 male (16 - 25, John), 1 male (26 - 45, Adam, Sr.), 3 females (under 10, Margaret, Christina and unknown girl), 2 females (10 - 15, Elizabeth and Savilla), and 1 female (26 - 45, Elizabeth). Mary, presumably the oldest daughter, is living with her husband David Crickenbarger in 1810. The 1820 census shows the following for Adam May, Sr.'s household: 1 male (under 10, Samuel), 1 male (16 - 18, Heinrich), 1 male (45 +, Adam, Sr.), 2 females (under 10, Gertrude and Sarah), 3 females (10 - 15, Margaret, Christina, and unknown girl), and 1 female (45 +, Elizabeth). John who married Catherine Utsler is enumerated separately. Mary is living with her husband David Crickenberger. Elizabeth is enumerated with her husband John Blakely. Savilla is absent from this census. Note that 5 sons were enumerated on the 1810 and only 1 son is enumerated on the 1820 census born before 1810. Adam, Jr., Jacob, and Daniel appear to be missing. Daniel could possibly be living with his brother, John May where there is a male (10 - 16). Also, there is a female 16 - 25, who could be one of John's sisters, possibly the unknown girl who was 10 - 15 on the 1810 census. She could also be related to Catherine Eutsler. Minerva Eutsler is listed as a female less than 10. The 1830 census shows the following for Adam May, Sr.'s household: 1 male (10 - 15, Samuel), 1 male (60 - 70, Adam, Sr.), 2 females (under 5, unknown), 2 females (5 - 10, unknown), 2 females (20 -30, Christina and Margaret), and 1 female (50 - 60, Elizabeth). John, Adam, Jr., and Jacob are enumerated separately. Henry and Daniel appear to be missing. Adam May last appears on the personal property tax rolls in 1834. He was last visited on 7 March 1834. Adam probably died sometime between 7 March 1834 and approximately the same time in 1835, as he did not appear on the 1835 tax list, nor does he appear on the 1840 Rockingham County, Va. census.
