Much of this data comes from Biographical Review of Des Moines County, IA pages 1039-1040 as reported to me March 2002 from David Hartzell Leebrick, 215 Neville Circle NE, Palm Bay, FL 32907 (321) 725-9380: email: [email protected], See Burlington, Iowa Hawkeye, Tues. 16 Sept 1890, pg. 3 col. 4. "Another pioneer of Des Moines County has passed away..(paraphrased hereon plus data of other sources...) Mr. Adam Hartzell died at his home 8-9 miles West of Burlington on Dodgeville Rd. at age 81 (81y, 5m 8d according to Burlington Daily Gazett Monday Sept. 15, 1890). Born PA in 1809, came to Iowa 1840 (maybe June 1844). See 1840 Census for Newport Borough of Adams Co., PA page 286 with occupation of Navigation of canals, lakes, and rivers. Buried15 Sep 1890 in Des Moines County Franklin Mills Cemetery. Managed mills (learned trade from his father) and farmed at various times. The bio. report said that he and wife Catherine A. McAllister had13 children, only 6 were living when he died. The six were: Randall M., Adam R., Samuel T . of Peru, KS, Mrs. S.M. Lines, Sophia M. and Austin L. of Des Moines County, IA. Mr. Hartzell was Republican, Methodist. 1856 Iowa State Farm Census, pgs. 1198-1199 gave children as John, Randall, Adam, Mary, Sophia, Samuel and MIchael.
