About Adam Fisher
Adam Fisher of Hampshire County, Virginia must have had a prior wife to Christiana See, daughter of Michael See. She was too young to have been the mother of many of Adam's children. Additional research and records are needed to find the identity of Adam Fisher's likely first wife and mother of most of his children.
Will Abstract
- In the name of God Amen, I Adam Fisher, Black Smith of the County of Hampshire and Colloney of Virginia being weak in body, but of sound mind and memory blessed be God, Do here make this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form as follows. That is to say that it is my desire that in the first place, that after my Decease, I be deacently buried after a Christian manner, and my funeral charges to be paid and all my Just Debts...
- Imprimis I do leave and bequeath unto my well beloved Wife Christian Fisher, the benefit of as much of the plantation I now live on (in the manor) as she shall stand in need of during her widowhood, and likewise one Negro wench named Fan, to be hers during her widowhood and no longer, and if she should marry again she is to have what the law allows.
- The will then goes on to provide for the six sons and two daughters of Adam and his beloved wife, whose name appears three times as "Christian" and once as "Christina".
- The will is probated in 1783 and it ends in a mysterious renunciation of all rights by Christian or Christina. She refused to join in the probate, declaring that "she would not accept, receive, or take any Legacy or Legacies to her given or bequeathed in this Will or any part thereof and renounced all benefit and advantage which she might claim by the same." It is probable that Christian, or Christina, was married again, or intended to be, for she must still have been a young women and she was, after all, the mother of only eight children. [Note: based upon her age, Christina See was clearly not the mother of Adam Fisher's older children at the very least, so records need to be found to determine which [if any] of Adam's children that she bore].
