Facts and Events
Ada Cornelia Slade was the first born daughter of Norman H. Slade and Hattie Amelia Perry of Bennington, VT. She married Walter D. Boomhower of St. Albans, VT in 1910. Walter and Ada Slade apparently met in the State School in Vergennes, Vermont. We have obtained electronic copies of the handwritten diaries for the school for the years 1908 and 1909. Interesting entries are: Sunday, March 1, 1908 A list of Probationers is shown. Among them is Ada Slade. Thursday, December 9, 1909 Ada Slade (something illegible) hurt her ankle while coasting last evening. They apparently resided in Bennington after their wedding where their children, Walter Jr. and Blanche were born. In 1917 they returned to Vergennes. In 1918 she was stricken with the flu in the great epidemic and never recovered. According to Charlotte Foucher's unpublished manuscript, her sister Lura and her husband George Foucher had been with her at the end. Lura and George convinced Walter that everyone should go to Bennington and Ada be buried in a plot which Hattie had. After the New Year (1919)Lura convinced Walter to return north and leave Walter, Jr. and Blanche with her and George. Charlotte's narrative notes that, "The following year saw another demise in the family. Norman Slade suffered a heart attack, and died quite suddenly." This would fix his year of death as 1920. In "Vick's Standard Res. & Bus. Directory 1906-1907" Ada is listed as boarding at 113 Park. This is the home of her father Norman H., Jr. She is listed as doing housework and Norman as a mill employee. Although Hattie is not listed it appears wives are omitted in all cases. Likewise, although Burnside and his mother Charlotte are listed at the corner of Beech and Branch, Jennie is not mentioned. References
