Abraham is listed in the 1850 census records of Linn Co., Iowa, where he was listed in his father’s household. Listed were: Raleigh Hess 43, a farmer and Catherine 30, both born in Virginia; and children all born in Indiana: Jonathan 19, a farmer; George 18; Abram 16; Jemima 14; and Julia A. 12. The 1860 census of Linn Township in Linn Co. enumerated the family again as: Raleigh Hess 51, a farmer; Catherine 48; and Abram N. 23, and Julia Ann 16.

On 11 Apr 1869, Abraham N. Hess married Sarah Loomis in Polk Co., Iowa.153 In 1870, the census records enumerated Abraham and his new family as living in Clifton Township, Washington Co., Kansas, where Abram was 30; Sarah 27, and born in Indiana; Nelson was 6 months and had been born in Kansas. Also in the household was an Alvion Farris who was 8 and had been born in Iowa. When the 1880 census was taken, the family was listed in Sherman, Washington Co. Abram was 43, a farmer; Sarah H. was 40; Aberham (sic) 11; Jula (sic) A. 5; Rolla J. 4; Rosie M. 2; and Lila 3 months. All of the children had been born in Kansas. Also in the household was Daniel H. Lummis, 19, who had been born in Iowa. He was a stepson and a farmer by occupation.

By 1885, Abram was in Washington Territory where he was listed in the 1885 Washington Territorial Census of Tacoma in Pierce Co. A. Hess was age 55, and had no family with him, but the 1887 Washington Territorial Census of Whatcom Co. listed A. N. Hess age 50; Sarah A. 47; Oscar 29; A. N. Hess age 17; Julian age 13; Rosa 8; R. J. 10; and Lillie 7. In 1900, Abraham and Sarah were listed separately for some reason, as the census of Delta Precinct in Whatcom Co. listed A. N. Hess, born Oct 1836 in Iowa, living by himself. The census taker made a note on the form - “not at home, did not see him.” The census of Fairhaven City in Whatcom Co. listed Sarah, born in Oct 1839, and occupation nurse in the household of Elijah Smith who was 48 and had a wife and three young sons. The record indicated Sarah had been married for 30 years and that eight children had been born to her and two were still living. This is in conflict with the 1910 census record.

On 15 Mar 1917, Abraham was admitted to the Retsil Soldiers’ Home in Port Orchard, Washington. His pension at the time was $30 per month. When he applied, he indicated he was a widower, and had no one to look after him. He was 79 years of age and had been born in Hamilton Co., Indiana. He had good mental capacity for his age and was 6 feet 2 inches in height. He was admitted for “severe arithemia and disease of age.” He also stated he had lived in the state of Washington for 25 years.

On 27 Oct 1917, Abraham married Nellie Lawson in Port Orchard, Kitsap Co., Washington. Witnesses were Charles E. Hathaway and Charles N. Sisson. And on 29 Oct 1917, Nellie Hess, who stated she had been born on 4 Jul 1842 in Manchester, England, applied to be admitted to the Retsil Soldiers’ Home. She said she had lived continuously in Washington State since 1887, and was the widow of Ezra Lawson who had died 4 Jan 1902. She had married Ezra 27 Nov 1884 in Chicago, Illinois. His application was approved on the same day she applied. The 1920 census listed Abraham, age 83, and his wife Nellie, age 76, both living at the Retsil Soldiers’ Home in Port Orchard, Washington.

Abraham died 14 Dec 1923 at the Retsil Soldiers’ Home and was brought to Whatcom Co. for burial in the Blaine Cemetery. Cemetery records indicate he was married three times: (1) to Frany Harris; (2) to Sarah Ann Hosford Loomis; and (3) to Nellie Lawson. His wife Sarah Ann had also been buried in the Blaine Cemetery when she died 14 Oct 1916. Nellie Hess would die on 1 Jan 1931 at the Retsil Soldiers’ Home. Her place of burial is unknown. ---Research by members of Whatcom Genealogical Society---
