    ABRAHAM HAPTONSTALL

Abraham Haptonstall (1759-1847) came to Greenbrier County in 1783 after serving in the Orange County, NY Militia during the Revolutionary War. He enlisted in 1775 at the age of sixteen and took part in several battles during the next two years. The 1783 Tax List shows Abraham with no horses or cows, but by 1815 his taxable property included 6 horses and 11 cows. Early Greenbrier County records refer to him as "Jr." and "young Haptonstall". He is probably related to Abraham Haptonstall and Isaac Haptonstall, both whom were in Greenbrier County as early as 1771, but so far, no proof of the relationship has been found. He married Rachel Price (1763-1834) in 1784. In 1800 he assumed the obligations of Abraham, Sr. and then moved to Woodford County, Kentucky. Ten months later, he returned to Greenbrier, and acquired several tracts of land on the Greenbrier River and on Howard's Creek, one of which included a mill. In 1816, Abraham and Rachel moved to Gallia County, OH, where some of their children were living. They sold 196 acres on the Greenbrier River for $1.00 to their son-in-law, Jesse Bright, who also purchased additional land that had belonged to Abraham and Rachel in 1818 and again in 1843. Abraham received a Revolutionary War Pension of $60 per year beginning in 1831. Rachel died in 1834, and eight years later, Abraham moved to the home of his daughter in Knox County, Illinois. He died there in 1847 at the age of 88.
