Facts and Events
(Research):The following is research from Sharon. There seems to be 2 Abraham Butlers born in Peasmarsh abt 1776-1778. Need to establish which one had Abraham Butler b. 1801. Abraham was baptised at Peasmarsh Parish Church on 07 Jun 1776. In 1841 Abraham was a carpenter living at Mount Pleasant, off Main Rd, Peasmarsh. Abraham is shown on his son James`s marriage certificate as a labourer (1846). In 1851 Abraham was a farm labourer living in North Side Street, Peasmarsh. In 1861 Abraham was a living independently, formerly a carpenter and boarding with Jesse Butler and Jesse`s brother Jabez Butler at Main Road Peasmarsh. Subject: "List of persons who have obtained General Certificates for killing of Game in the County of Sussex, for the present year, which list is made up to the 9th inst. Published by order of his Majesty`s Commissioners for the Affairs of Taxes. Matthew Winter, Sec. Sept 16 1809." Amongst this list of names is "Butler, Abraham jun., Peasmarsh. Butler, Abraham, sen., Ditto". Things I still need to check out Land Tax 1816 ref XA31/22/3 has Abraham Butler as the Proprietor of lands named Kitchenour at rent of £8. It also has Abraham Butler as the occupier of Bushy Farm (£40 rent), Denises (£5 rent), Tanhouse (£4 rent) and Mrs Butler as the occupier of Marley (£67 Rent). More research into this land is required. Also ESRO Ref AMS6454/9/2 mentions "John Morris built a house on the land, which by 1801 had become vested in Abraham Butler. On 9 and 10 October Butler sold the property to William Whatman for £85...". Another ESRO reference DAP/Box322/4/7 dated 1793-1823 "Messuage, barn, buildings and land called Shepherds Farm (35a) in Peasmarsh and Beckley, with two cottages erected by Abraham Butler". There is a deposit of title deeds ESRO reference DAP/Box330/2 wich references "Warren Farm, The Butlers and Lad". References
