Facts about Abraham BrookhartObtained from Jane Whiteman’s book:The Brookhart Family (1980) Abraham Brookhart, son of Julius, was born in 1757 in Allegheny Co, PA. He was in Hellam and Manchester Township, York Co., PA from 1770 through 1791. On September 3, 1780 at the First Reformed Church, York Co., PA he married Mary Magdalene Kohler, daughter of Andrew and Maria Magdalene Kohler of Manchester Township, York Co., PA. Mary was born in 1761. About 1791 they moved to Frankfort, Hampshire Co., Virginia (Now Ft. Ashby, Mineral County, W. VA.). In 1811, they moved to Hockingport, Troy Township, Athens County, Ohio. A letter from the PA Historical and Museum Commission on March 25, 1970 states that Abraham Bruckard was enrolled as a Private, 6th class. Caption Simon Koppenhaffer’s 7th Company, 3rd Battalion, York County Militia, according to the evidence of a Company Return dated February 8, 1783 signed by William H. Work, Chief, Division of Archives and Manuscripts. From Jane Whiteman's book (1980): The following paragraph is from Ray Brookhart of California . Family tradition, according to Thompson L. Brookhart of Washington , Iowa , about 1935, was that four generations had the name Abram or Abraham. His father, Abram Colar, grandfather Abram C., great-grandfather Abraham, and great-great grandfather. The fourth Abraham was a mystery man to the Brookhart researchers because in a land deed transferred by all of Julius' children to Daniel in 1795, Abraham’s (born 1757) name did not appear. Many did not believe him to be a child of Julius. However, when Julius' original Will was transcribed (written in High-German) the mystery was solved. Abraham was disinherited because he failed to repay the 30 pounds his father had loaned him years ago. Abraham's inheritance was bequests to his children or legal heirs. He married September 3, 1780 at First Reformed Church, York County, Pennsylvania, to Mary Magdalena Kohler daughter of Andrew and Maria Magdalena Kohler. Mary Magdalena was born ca 1761 in Pennsylvania, and died October 8, 1836 at the home of son-in-law Samuel Dutton in Hockingport, Athens County, Ohio. Tax lists show Abraham and brother David jointly owning land in York County, Pennsylvania in 1779. In 1781, Abraham and his father, Julius, jointly owned land in Manchester Twp. In 1783, Abraham was taxed on 300 acres and a grist mill in Hellam Twp. Abraham enlisted as a private sixth class in Cpt. Simon Koppenhaffer's Seventh Co., Third Battalion, York County Militia during the American Revolution, according to a company return dated February 8, 1783. He paid taxes on a grist mill in Hellam Twp., York County that year. About 1791 Abraham and family (wife and four daughters) and his brother David moved to Frankfurt, Hampshire County, Virginia (now Fort Ashby, Mineral County) and paid taxes there until 1805. He was a constable 1797-1799. He was in the 1810 census for Wood County, (West) Virginia. It is assumed he moved there ca 1806. Abraham owed his father 30 pounds when his father Julius died. Julius' will, written April 17, 1793, disinherited Abraham because of the debt. In 1811 Abraham moved to Athens County, Ohio and was a trustee in Troy Twp. for several years. Abraham and Mary spent their last years in the home of their daughter Nancy Dutton and her husband in Hockingport , Athens County, Ohio, where they each died. They had 11 children, 54 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Children of Abraham Brookhart and Mary Kohler are: i. Elizabeth "Betsy" Brookhart, born July 12, 1781 in Pennsylvania; died April 1865 in Athens County, Ohio. She married John Fleak and they had eleven children, incluidng John Fleak Jr., who married Mary Sheets. They lived in Hampshire County for many years before moving to Ohio. ii. Mary Brookhart, born February 6, 1783 in Pennsylvania. iii. Andrew Brookhart, born January 20, 1785 in Pennsylvania; apparently died before 1790 in Pennsylvania. iv. Barbara Brookhart, born January 4, 1787 in York County, Pennsylvania; died September 1863 in Scotland County, Missouri. v. Magdalena "Mahaly or Mollie" Brookhart, born February 12, 1789 in York County, Pennsylvania; died May 15, 1853 in Belleville, Wood County, (West) Virginia. She married John Weigal ca 1820 in Wood County. He died May 18, 1853 in Belleville, Wood County, (West) Virginia. John Weigal built the first cabin about 1820 in Steele District, just above Wadesville in Wood County. Henry Sheets built the second. (From Pioneers of Wood County by John House and Hardesty's Atlas of Wood County 1882.) John and Mahaly's marriage was the first in the District. Their children were Maricella, Elizabeth Ann born ca 1817, Phillip born ca 1819, Abraham Wigal, born June 25, 1822 and George Washington born ca 1824. vi. Susan(nah) Brookhart, born March 24, 1791 York County, Pennsylvania, died July 18, 1853 Mercer County, Illinois. She married Stanton Prentiss Nov. 13, 1817 in Wood County, (West) Virginia. He had served in the War of 1812. They lived first in Ohio then moved to Warsaw, Hancock County, Illinois in 1831. In 1835, they moved to Rock Island, Illinois and in 1852 to New Boston, Mercer County, Illinois. At some point they spent two years in California. They had nine children. Stanton died ca 1875. vii. Henry Brookhart, born November 26, 1793 in Hampshire County, Virginia, died December 18, 1853 in Iowa. He married Catherine Weigal 1817 in Wood County, (West) Virginia. References
