According to the 1900 St. Francis County, Arkansas census records, Abner was born April 1886 in Arkansas (according to his obituary he was born April 1888). He could read and write at the age of 13. He was living with his grandmother Malissa Elliott who was 64 and widowed. Also living with him in 1900 were: William, age 26; Roy, age 7 and Loucela(?), age 3, all born in Arkansas. Anna L. (age 8) and Ruth (age 5) were supposedly his sisters but were living with someone named R. W. Roy in the same town (Forrest City).

    In 1910, Abner was living with his other grandmother Mallie Roy in Marshall County, OK.  According to the 1910 census, he was 22 years old.  Living with him and his grandmother were:  Minnie Roy (age 35), Annie Lee Elliott (age 18), Ruth Elliott (age 15) and Robert Elliott (age 12).
    When he was 17 Abner and another boy(s) supposedly blew up an ammunition's plant(?).  They were given the choice of federal prison or joining the military.  Abner joined the military and one of his first duties was in San Francisco after the great earthquake of 1907(?).  He was a private for 3 years in the Infantry.
