Name: Abner Chappell 1 2
Sex: M
Birth: 12 APR 1763 in Amelia County, Virginia
Death: 1839 in Howard County, Missouri
Note: Abner Chappell (12 April 1763 -1839) served a six-month tour of duty during the Revolution.
In the Fall of 1780, he marched from Amelia County in Capt. William Crawley’s Company. His commander was William Crawley, Abner’s half-cousin. Crawley, a militia officer, resigned and they placed the company under Capt. Holmes, a regular army officer. The company was under the command of General Steuben. They later attached Abner’s company to Capt. Allen’s Company of Cumberland County. Abner saw no action and spent the second half of his service corralling horses.
Abner married Susannah Moore 4 September (bond) 1786. On 27 September 1787 a deed of emancipation freed Abner’s slaves Tom, Bob, and Lucy — all about forty years of age. In 1793 he emancipated Matt and Patram and, in 1801, he freed children, Rhoda and Moses. Abner and his family moved to Bedford County, Tennessee, in 1807 and to Howard County, Missouri, in 1820. His first wife died before 1821 when Abner and Susanna Crawley agreed to a premarital contract. Susanna was undoubtedly the free mulatto woman named “Suckey” who was a legatee in the will of Benjamin Crawley which Abner Chappell witnessed. Another legatee was her son, Jonathan, who was later known as Jonathan Crawley. The Amelia County tax list of 1800 listed “Free Suky (Crawley’s)” with three horses and four slaves more than twelve years of age. Susanna Crawley who married Abner Chappell also had a son named Jonathan.
On 6 October 1826 Abner Chappell sold a tract of land in Howard County to Hugh W. Burch. Susanna relinquished her dower right. In 1829 witnesses attested Abner’s signature on his marriage contract with Susanna. She had probably died. A year later her son sold some land that included 160 acres that had belonged to his mother. Abner was living in Howard County in 1833 when he applied for his Revolutionary War pension On 2 June 1834 he bought 40 acres from John Cates.
Abner died in 1839. On 7 February 1842, Wiley Chappell of Halifax County conveyed to Stephen W. Lewis his portion of his fathers’ estate for $225. During the May Term 1844 when the Howard County court recorded a final settlement of the estate of “A. Chappell, dec’d.” A beneficiary was “Mrs. Sarah Clay,” who we presume was his sister, though it may have been a daughter.
