AMOS ADAMS- HISTORY OF LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MICHIGAN - HOWELL -
Howell's first school-house was built, and first district school opened, in 1837. The school-house was erected on a lot which had been donated by Mr. Cane for the purpose. This school was opened in the summer of that year by Amos Adams's daughter Abigail. She was succeeded in the teacher's office by Justin Durfee. It is not, however, improbable that Miss Adams had taught a few scholars in her father's house before the building of the school-house. Page 156 The person who first wielded the teacher's rod in Howell was Miss Abigail Adams, daughter of Amos Adams, though whether her first teaching was in the school-house, or in a private house before the school-house was completed, is not entirely certain. There is little doubt, however, that she was the first teacher in the school-house, in the summer of 1837. The first school was taught in the loft of the Eagle Tavern in 1836, in Livingston centre, now Howell. The first teacher was Abigal Adams, daughter of Amos Adams. In 1837 the first school was build, and the first teacher there was Abigal Adams, her wages are not known, but in 1850 the average wage for a good teacher was 1.50 per week plus board. |
