Respectfully referring to the chief of Record and Pension Office, War Dept, former reports in the matter of service and treatment of Jacob Varner, and requesting a new copy of the report of January 27, 1881, which is mutilated, and additional reports, if any, as to service and treatment.
As it appears that there were two soldiers in Co. I. 16" Ind. Vol. Inf., bearing the name of Varner, please furnish descrip. of each, with tracing of signatures.

and during that period the rolls show him present except as follows Feb 28/62 In hosp'l at Frederick Md; Apl 30/62 In hosp'l Baltimore; June 30/62 In Frederick hosp'l Md;

from en. to drop? he held the rank of pvt and during that period the rolls show him present except as follows:-
No roll of Co I 16 Ind Mtd Inf June 30/65 on file other than ? roll of Co dated June 30/65 which reports him transf'd June 29 - 65 to 13 Ind Cav.
Roll of Co. B, 13 Ind Cav. Aug. 31/65 (First of that Co in which he is found) reports him transf'd from the 16 Ind Inf (Mtd?) July 13 - 65, on detached duty as provost Guard Columbus Miss.
Personal Description as follows: Age 25; 5ft 8-1/2; blue eyes, dark hair, light complexion, born North Carolina, Laborer.
