- Muster-in roll card: Muster-in date on this card is 14 Jun 1861. Age is given as 21. He was mustered in at Lafayette (La Fayette), Indiana. Period of duty is listed as 3 years.
- Muster roll card Apr through Aug 1861: Rank is Private. Enrollment date is given as 6 Jun 1861 in Valparaiso, Indiana. (Note: Valparaiso was much closer to his home in Hobart, IN.)
- Muster roll card Sep and Oct 1861: Remarks say, "Detailed for repairing roads from Oct. 16 to Oct. 30."
- Muster roll card Mar and Apr 1862: Rank is Corporal. Remarks say, "Appointed Corpl Apr 30. 62 by order Col. Wood"
- Muster roll card May and Jun 1862: Remarks say, "Due U.S. $1.34"
- Muster roll card May and Jun 1863: Rank is Sergeant. Remarks say, "Promoted from Corpl to Segt March 8. 63 vice Dougall promoted." This would be William Dougall, who was mustered in as a corporal in Company C and later appointed Sergeant. However, there is no obvious promotion past sergeant, so he may have been temporarily off duty.
- Muster roll card Nov and Dec 1863: Remarks say, "Left at Chattanooga on account of wounds received at Mission Ridge Nov. 25 '63."

- Muster-out roll card: Age is still given as 21 years. Mustered out at Indianapolis, IN on 25 Jun 1864. Last paid to 30 Apr 1864. Clothing account: Last settled 30 Jun 1863, drawn since $27.54. Remarks state, "Promoted to Corporal Apr. 30, '62. Promoted to Sergt. and Color Bearer for gallant conduct at Stone River[1] Jany. 11, '63. Promoted 1st Sergt. Jany. 27, '64. Wounded in storming Mission Ridge[2] Nov. 25, '63."
