Jesse H. Auvil, 99, summoned
Jesse H. Auvil, 99, who served as chairman of the State Grange spray
residue committee which in the late 1930's and early 1940's successfully
battled the extremely low spray residue tolerance imposed on apple
growers, died May 19 in a Wenatchee convalescent center. He was
a long time member of Entiat grange, Chelan County.
Born in West Virginia, Mr. Auvil came to Wenatchee in 1905 and taught
school in that area prior to getting into the fruit business. He was president
of the Wenatchee District Cooperative Association five years and served
several years as Chelan County Treasurer. For a time he managed the
Auburn Union Stockyards, established by the former Grange Cooperative
Livestock Marketing Association. Later the Auvils moved to Bremerton
where he was employed at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Several years
after his retirement they moved back to Wenatchee.
Mr. Auvil's Grange offices included Master of the former Excelsior
Grange and the Entiat Grange.
He is survived by his wife, Fay, two sons, two daughters, a brother,
seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
