Ancestors & Decendants of Beloved Woman/War Woman Cornblossom

As you know, in the world of Genealogy, there are so many twists and turns and nothing is "written in stone". This information was gathered by various descendants of Beloved Woman Cornblossom. Some refer to her as 'Princess'; I was corrected early on and told it was NOT the proper title. Much information has not been proven, as records are scarce or none at all. It is interesting reading, hopefully a help to some, but please remember to document for yourself. Any corrections or proof welcomed!

Is this Beloved Woman Cornblossom, daughter of Chief Doublehead? This picture was found in the Monticello, KY library. It was in a book by Mr. Kenneth Coffey, taped over a sketch that he had drawn of Beloved Woman Cornblossom. (9/3/2002 note from Mr. Roy Troxell, a descendant, was told: "is a picture copied from a 3x4 tintype that was placed in K. Coffey's book by a fellow who wishes to be nameless. He said the picture is of one of Cornblossom's granddaughters who is the spitting image of Cornblossom. The picture was taken about 1860 or has been in his family's possession since 1860") Thank you, Roy.

Notes for CHRISTIAN GOTTLIEB PRIBER: Christian Gottlieb Priber was sent to this country in 1736 to try to win the country for France. Prime Minister to the Cherokee Indians. Married daughter of a Cherokee Chief. Died in British political prison in 1753 leaving behind his wife and four daughters. Information found through historian/author Thomas H. Troxel.

"Now, as for Chief Doublehead, I originally quoted the following from the "Jonathan Blevins" book which is partially inaccurate (concerning his death).
Chief Chugqualatague, or Doublehead, was the last Cherokee Chief to exercise control over the upper Cumberland plateau and was a lieutenant of Dragging Canoe. He was born near the present town of Somerset, KY, and had two known children by his wife who was reported to be of French-Indian extraction. These children were Cornblossom and Tuckaho.
I have found several good books on Cherokee history, some of which give a good account of the circumstances of Doublehead's death. They are "Cherokee Tragedy: The Ridge Family and the Decimation of a People", by Thurman Wilkins, 1986, Univ. of Oklahoma Press, "The Cherokees", by Grace Steele Woodward, 1963, Univ. of Oklahoma Press, and "Trail of Tears: The Rise and Fall of the Cherokee Indian Nation", by John Ehle, 1988, Anchor Books (Doubleday). The first books gives the most detailed account and quotes two primary sources in its bibliography as follows:
1) The Deposition of Caleb Starr concerning the death of Doublehead, dated Aug. 11, 1838, in the National Archives, RG75, Office of Indian Affairs, Removal Records (Cherokee), First Board of Cherokee Commissioners files, Heirs of Doublehead for spoilations."

2) "Col. Phillips' testimony relating to the death of Doublehead...Highwasee, Aug. 15, 1807", in National Archives, RG75, Records of the Cherokee Agency in Tennessee, M-208, Roll 3.....I will try to summarize as best I can.

Chief Doublehead was a brother of Chief Old Tassel, as well as Pumpkin Boy. After the signing of the Treaty of Hopewell in 1785, delegates from Congress were trying to keep the peace between the Cherokees and squatters on their lands. In June 1788, Old Tassel was killed by a renegade settler by the name of Kirk while under a flag of truce and war became unavoidable. Old Tassel's death united the Cherokees under Little Turkey, including the Chickamaugas under Dragging Canoe, who split from the other Cherokee tribes some time earlier. In May 1792, John Watts succeeded Dragging Canoe as War Chief with Doublehead as his second in command. In Sep 1893, Watts and Doublehead led a campaign against the white settlers.
A great atrocity was perpetrated on this campaign. Doublehead, his brother Pumpkin Boy, and their nephew Bench (Bob Benge) ambushed Capt. Overall, a known Indian fighter, and a companion named Burnett near Dripping Spring in KY. After they killed and scalped the two men, the Indians drank their whiskey, cut strips off the dead men, then roasted and devoured their flesh. At some time, Pumpkin Boy was killed on this campaign. John Sevier launched a campaign against the Cherokee towns and after a battle at Etowah, forced the Cherokees to sue for peace. Although another Treaty was signed in 1794, Brigadier General James Robertson had to tell Major James Ore to lead another campaign against the Chickamaugas before peace was restored.
In 1796, Chief Doublehead had become the Speaker for the Cherokee Nation and became the chief spokesman for all negotiations with the Federal government. There were 3 cessions made of Cherokee lands in 1798 and it was common knowledge that Doublehead had prospered as a result. By 1804, he had become a prosperous land owner with about two dozen slaves. The Secretary of War, Dearborn, in fact, had given instructions that all agents were to deal specifically with Doublehead on the assumption he could be bribed. In 1805, Dearborn had Col. Return Jonathan Meigs acquire several valuable tracts of land with the promise that two tracts at the mouth of the Clinch and Hiwasee Rivers be exclusively for Doublehead's use. To add fuel to the fire, Doublehead had also leased several tracts at Muscle Choals to white farmers from a treaty he signed in Dec. 1806.
By this time, a Cherokee faction led by James Vann, Major Ridge, and Alexander Saunders decided Doublehead should die for his crimes. Vann had a family score to settle. Doublehead had married a sister to Vann's wife and had treated her brutally, beating her to death while she was pregnant.
Therefore, the three men decided to execute the traitor in Aug. 1807, when the Cherokees collected the annual annuity from the Federal agent. However, on the way, Vann fell ill and could not continue.
On Aug. 9, 1807, Ridge and Saunders arrived at McIntosh's Tavern on the Hiwassee and waited for an opportunity. Doublehead had been playing ball 3 miles away where he had killed a man called Bone-Polisher who had become abusive. Therefore, he didn't arrive until after dark, half drunk. Suddenly, Ridge blew out the candle in the Tavern and fired a shot at Doublehead which shattered his jaw. Having thought they killed him, they slipped out into the dark. However, they soon learned the tavernkeeper had moved the wounded Chief to his house and then again to the loft of a Mr. Black, who taught in Gideon Blackburn's school. By then, two men from Bone Polisher's clan had joined them and together they rushed the room where Doublehead lay. As they approached, the wounded chief sprang up, drew a dirk, and tried to draw a pistol but was caught up in the sheet around him. Both Ridge and Saunders leveled their guns at him but misfired. Doublehead then grappled with Ridge but Saunders drove his tomahawk into Doublehead's skull so hard that it took two hands and a foot to pry it loose. After the killing, most of the Cherokees felt it was justified and his relatives were not forced by clan responsibility to exact revenge. This led to the abolition of clan revenge at the Council of Broomstown on Sept. 11, 1808. However, James Vann was killed in 1809 possibly for his part in the execution."

Jan 18, 1758 - 1759 in Philadelphia, Bucks Co., PA or Frederick Co., MD, and died Oct 08, 1810 in Yahoo Falls Massacre, Wayne Co., KY.

Cherokee Indian; Buried in McCreary Co., KY A bronze marker marks her grave in Stearns, KY. (No one knows for sure WHERE...) She and most of her tribe were murdered by whites in the massacre of 1810 near Yahoo Falls.

Notes for GEORGE JACOB "BIG JAKE" TROXELL:
Fought in Revolutionary War. Buried near entrance to Yahoo Falls northwest of Whitley Co., KY. Grave is maintained by forest rangers. Buried near Alum Ford? Information of his children and history from the "Ancestors of Nancy Faye Gregory" home page of Family Tree Maker "During the American Revolution, "Big Jake" TROXEL cast his lot with the rebelling colonies. He then came south as a trader among the Indians, seeking out any conspiracies between the Indians and the British against the Colonies. Through a series of friendly contacts, he became a very close friend of Chief Doublehead. This friendship became so solid that Big jake was inducted into the tribe as a "blood-brother" and eventually married his daughter, Beloved Woman Cornblossom, who bore him many children. There is some controversy over the idenity of "Big Jake" TOXEL. A Richard M. Troxel in his books, Troxel Trails, presents an argument that "Big Jake" was actually George Jacob Troxel, born in 1758 in Frederick Co., MD. He lived there until about 13 years of age, where he migrated through Loudon Co., VA, Sullivan Co. TN, Sevier Co., TN, then to Wayne Co.,KY, then to Marion Co.,TN, and finally to Jackson Co.,AL before he died in DeKalb Co.,AL on Jul 1 1843, being survived by a widow, Elizabeth, who was still living in 1853.

Another story has Jacob "Big Jake" Troxel coming from the Philadelphia, PA area where his ancestors had immigrated to the New World from Switzerland. A Jacob Troxel is listed as a private in Capt. John Shelmire's 6th Co. in the Philadelphia Co. Militia in 1781. He died in 1810 and is buried on the road from Marshes Siding, KY to the mouth of the Alum Creek near the entrance to Yahoo Falls Recreation area in the Daniel Boone National Forest in McCreary Co.KY. This burial site is marked by an appropriate historical marker, erected by the Daniel Boone National Forest Service. (See notes below of Charles Austin) However, this marker is nothing more than a memorial marker and no known evidence (that I know of) places "Big Jakes" death in this area. (Charles Austin: "George Jacob Troxel did not die in KY in 1810. He died in DeKalb Co., AL in 1843. Quite a while after the so called "Massacre". Nor is there any indication that Jake was scalped at said massacre." "As a descendant of George Jacob Troxel 1758-1843, his son, William, 1800, his daug Lucinda,10 Nov 1830, etc. I have gathered facts and fiction about the family if you are interested, just let me know. A descendant Thomas Harlan Troxel wrote a book about his "dreams" which Danny Troxell has expanded with his dreams, most of which are just that, an immaginary "tall Tale". Cornblossom was born under the Sand Cliffs at Stearns, KY, near where the old Southern Railroad "Coalchute" or refueling station was located. Legend is that as a young girl, she accompanied her father, Chief Doublehead, at the signing of the Treaty of Sycamore Shoals in 1775, which transferred Cherokee land between the Ohio and Cumberland Rivers to the Transylvania Society. Also, while protecting the tribe's secret mine, she killed a renegade. Her burial place at Stearns, KY is marked by a KY State Historical Marker - 1075 near the First Baptist Church at Stearns and is approximately one mile from her birthplace under the Sand Cliffs at Stearns, KY.

"Near the town of Tanasee, and not far from the almost mythical town of Chote lies Taskigi(Tuskeegee), home of Sequoyah. In this peaceful valley setting Wut-teh, the daughter of a Cherokee Chief (Chief Great Eagle) , married Nathaniel Gist, a Virginia fur trader. The warrior Sequoyah was born of this union in 1776. Probably born handicapped, and thus the name Sequoyah(Sikwo-yi is Cherokee for "pig's foot"), Sequoyah fled Tennessee as a youth because of the encroachment of whites. He initially moved to Georgia, where he acquired skills working with silver. While in the state, a man who purchased one of his works suggested that he sign his work, like the white silversmiths had begun to do. Sequoyah considered the idea and since he did not know how to write he visited Charles Hicks, a wealthy farmer in the area who wrote English. Hicks showed Sequoyah how to spell his name, writing the letters on a piece of paper. Sequoyah began to toy with the idea of a Cherokee writing system that year(1809).

He moved to Willstown, Alabama, and enlisted in the Cherokee Regiment, fighting in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, which effectively ended the war against the Creek Redsticks. During the war, he became convinced of the necessity of literacy for his people. He and other Cherokees were unable to write letters home, read military orders, or record events as they occurred. After the war, he began in earnest to create a writing system.

Using a phonetic system, where each sound made in speech was represented by a symbol, he created "Talking Leaves", 85 letters that make up the Cherokee alphabet. His little girl Ayoka easily learned this method of communication. He demonstrated his syllabary to his cousin, George Lowrey, who was impressed. A short time later in a Cherokee Court in Chattooga, he read an argument about a boundary line from a sheet of paper. Word spread quickly of Sequoyah's invention. In 1821, 12 years after the original idea, the Cherokee Nation adopted Sequoyah's alphabet as their own. Within months thousands of Cherokee became literate.

The crippled warrior moved west to Arkansas. Mining and selling salt for money he was active in politics. In 1824 the National Council at New Echota struck a silver medal in his honor. Later, publication began on the first Native American newspaper, The Cherokee Phoenix in the same town. The painting of Sequoyah was made in 1828 on a trip to Washington to negotiate terms for removal from Arkansas to Oklahoma. Leaving the state in 1829, he had lived in Oklahoma for 10 years when Principal Chief John Ross led North Georgia Cherokee on the "Trail of Tears" to the state.

He died in Mexico (now Texas) in 1843 after possibly visiting family in a band of Chickamauga Cherokee who had moved there earlier. Perhaps the most eloquent praise paid to Sequoyah was by H.A. Scomp, member of Emory College faculty, when he said "...perhaps the most remarkable man who has ever lived on Georgia soil was neither a politician, nor a soldier, nor an ecclesiastic, nor a scholar, but merely a Cherokee Indian of mixed blood. And strange to say, this Indian acquired permanent fame, neither expecting or seeking it."

Realizing a key to development of the Cherokee Nation was a written language, Sequoyah began work on a graphic representation of the Cherokee language. The syllabary, officially listed as being completed in 1821, took 12 years to create. Sequoyah came up with the idea of "Talking Leaves" when he visited Chief Charles Hicks, who showed him how to write his name so he could sign his work like American silversmiths had begun to do. Initially, Sequoyah tried pictographs, but soon discovered that the number of symbols in the Cherokee language would be in the thousands. Then he began to create symbols for each syllable the Cherokees use. This was the essential step in creating the syllabary. Sequoyah's written language was not the first example of the concept. A Japanese syllabary was developed from 5th century A. D. Chinese ideographic writing. The concept of an alphabet, which denotes sounds instead of syllables, originated in Phoenicia. His work was interupted by the Creek War of 1813-1814, when he joined a Cherokee force under the leadership of The Ridge. After the war, Major Ridge would be called on as leader of the Lighthorse Patrol to punish to Sequoyah for trying to create the syllabary. The leaders of the tribe felt that this written language was the work of the devil, and to force him to stop they ordered Ridge to remove the tops of his fingers. Although he lacked a formal education he spoke several languages fluently. Returning to the Lower Towns, he continued his work while he was caught up in the Creek Path Conspiracy. His syllabary originally contained 115 characters, but he reduced this number to 83 before its first publication. Later, three additional sounds were added bringing the number up to 86. Disenchanted with the movement towards nationalism, Sequoyah left Georgia in 1821 and moved to Arkansas, arriving in 1822. He was living here when the syllabary was introduced to the Cherokee Nation. In a few short years one man had acheived a means of communication that had taken other civilizations thousands of years to accomplish. Use of the language spread quickly through the Chreokee Nation. Anyone who could speak the Cherokee language could learn to read or write in two weeks. Thousands of Cherokee began to use Sequoyah's invention on a daily basis and the syllabary gave the nation the ability to create the first American Indian newspaper, The Cherokee Phoenix The name "Talking Leaves" was satirical of whites. The Cherokee felt that white man's words dried up and blew away like leaves when the words no longer suited the whites. "
