Gravestone of David Littman, in the Jewish cemetery just outside of Spisske Podhradie, Slovakia. The inscription reads:

פנ here lies
כה איסר דוד the honorable Isser David
בן כה son of the honorable
Zeev Littman A"H
נפטר ב רחהמ פסח תרמב died 2nd intermediate day of Passover '642

A man who walked according to his faith
Shunned evil and did good until his death
Pursued peace and was great in his wisdom
Spoke the truth and acted righteously
His rights will protect his offspring
His way in burial will bring him rest

תנצבה T'N'Z'B'H

Notes on the inscription:
  • A"H = alav hashalom (peace be upon him), indicating that Zeev Littman had passed on at the time of this inscription
  • T'N'Z'B'H A standard gravestone inscription (like R.I.P.), it stands for "May his soul be bound up in the bonds of eternal life", from I Samuel 25:29.
  • The lovely verse praising his character is an acrostic. The first letter of each line is enlarged on the actual inscription, and when read down, it spells his name Isser David. This was not uncommon on gravestones in this time and region.
