"They initially were married March 20, 1942 before a Justice of Peace in Moscow, Idaho, due to rumors that the WSC ROTC members were about to be called to active service. On November 6, 1942 at Sigma Kappa Sorority at Washington State College, in Pullman, WA., Theda and Vern were married with family members present.

"Vern Mayer was officially sworn into the Army Air Corps in June 1942, at Geiger Field, Spokane, Washington. After extensive training he became a B-24 Navigator Instructor. Later, he was transferred to a unit that was scheduled for deployment to the South Pacific, but was released before deployment, shortly after the nuclear bombs were dropped in Japan."
