Help talk:Menu/Creating and editing pages

Menu title [7 January 2017]

Comment below is from the original thread about finalizing menu titles:

I had originally planned to go in a more general direction with this submenu, so the title was non-specific. After seeing your direction and thinking about it some more, I propose we change the title to something like "Person and Family pages" or "Working with Person and Family pages". We could repeat the more general links, such as Help:Creating vs Updating, Help:Deleting a page, etc. found here in other submenus as well (Sources, Places, etc.), since it applies and would link to the same info. Does this sound ok?

I still think we should change the menu title for this page, but I will hold off, pending your thoughts. I would recommend deleting the current page and starting fresh vs. redirect, since it is just us two and so early in development. Thanks, --cos1776 11:59, 7 January 2017 (UTC)
ps - Please note the rest of the thread on the main talk page for comments on the other menu titles.

I am in agreement with all of this. I'm not entirely sure what is the best title for the menu page - to be consistent with the 3 menu items below it, we probably should not include "Working with" in the title, and none of the other menu pages except for "Merging pages" uses the word "pages" in the title. That would leave this title to be "Persons and families", but that strikes me as just a touch odd. If it does not strike you as odd, we can go with that. If it does strike you as odd, let's see if inspiration strikes on how to improve consistency.--DataAnalyst 18:34, 7 January 2017 (UTC)

re: we probably should not include "Working with" in the titles. I'm curious why you feel that way? That would be one way of keeping it consistent. Something like:
  • Help:Menu/Working with Person and Family pages
  • Help:Menu/Working with Source pages
  • Help:Menu/Working with Place pages
  • Help:Menu/Working with Image and Media pages
  • Help:Menu/Working with Family trees and GEDCOMs
I will do a mock up of Sources and links on the main menu, so we can see what it looks like and make sure it isn't too wordy.

Follow up: To keep us moving forward, I went ahead and made some decisions on page titles. Did not use the "Working with" versions. Those ready for review have been noted on Help talk:Menu. --cos1776 23:40, 26 January 2017 (UTC)

The terms Creating vs Adding

One of the changes I was going to suggest when we moved the outline over was to change the title of Help:Creating a Person page to Help:Adding a new Person page (and likewise for other titles with "Creating" in them). Very early on WR switched from using Create to using Add partially to emphasize the difference between adding new and updating existing. Titling this way would continue to help make that distinction and stay in line with the content of your proposed Help:Creating vs updating, which could instead be titled Help:Adding new vs updating existing or something similar. --cos1776 11:59, 7 January 2017 (UTC)

Got it. Yes, we should change it everywhere to Add. We'll have to do a complete sweep of all Help content for this at some point.--DataAnalyst 18:34, 7 January 2017 (UTC)
Follow up: I made the change on the working outlines that remain on the main Help:Menu page and will do the same on this main page. --cos1776 17:27, 12 January 2017 (UTC)

Content revision

This is what we have now:

Before you start
Consider defining a Family tree group first
Understand the difference between adding new vs editing
Experiment in the Sandbox
Adding new Person and Family pages
Adding a new Person page
Adding a new Family page
Editing existing Person and Family pages
Editing an existing Person page
Editing an existing Family page
Page titles
Deleting
Delete an entire page
Delete some of the page, but keep the rest

Given that we have moved to specifying that this menu is specific to Person and Family pages and are going to update the title, perhaps we should also move "Understand the difference ..." , "Experiment in the Sandbox" and the Deleting section to "Help:Menu/Getting started --> Understanding WeRelate". Does that sound logical to you? --cos1776 23:40, 26 January 2017 (UTC)
