Birth, Marriage & Death Certificates

Typical birth, marriage and death certificates will include the following details that can be used to create a source citation for multiple vital statistics and can provide much more evidence of life events besides dates of birth, marriage and death. They can also be used to support parental data, residence information, cause of death and duration of illnesses that preceded their death, places of funeral and burial, and other data.

Census Records

In general, a census will include the following details that can be used to create a source citation for events such as "Census" and/or "Residence" on Person and Family Pages.

Master Source Data

  • Year & Type = Year of Census (example: 1850)
  • Jurisdiction = United States
  • Schedule = population schedule
  • Publish location = Washington, DC
  • Publisher = National Archives, Census Bureau
  • Publication type = Media type (example: Microfilm, Digitized, Print, etc.)
  • Film number = M19
  • Roll number = M256

Source Details

  • Civil Division = Exact place location on the top of the record page
  • Date of Record = Full date recorded on the pertinent census page (not just year of census)
  • Page ID = Page or sheet numbers hand written or stamped on page (example: Sheet 25A)
  • Household ID = Household number and/or line number
  • Person of Interest = Subject's name(s)

Supporting Details

  • Repository = Physical location or Internet site data was accessed (example: Ancestry.com)
  • Data Accessed = Date retrieved or saved (example: 15 May 1998)
  • Detail Text = Exact details found on the census record (complete or key data found on record)
  • Notes = Comments on inconsistency in name spellings etc. or other noteworthy details

Census records for Canada available for public review include 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901, 1906, and 1911.[1]

United Kingdom Census References

Census records for the United Kingdom and Ireland available for public review include 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911.[2]

Interment Records

Cemetery Photo & Transcription services include the following popular online sites with nationwide focus.[3] There are multiple monument, memorial and tombstone collection sites, some with nationwide coverage, many others with regional focus.[4]
