[add comment] [edit] marriage date [15 October 2015]I removed marriage date of 26 Dec 1733. According to Connecticut Nutmegger, Vol. 29, p. 2, "Mary Who?" by Cynthia Wald, the date 26 Dec 1723, is given by Source:Orcutt, Samuel. History of the Old Town of Stratford and the City of Bridgeport, Connecticut which says Stephen married Anne Sherman. It also states that Source:Burritt, Lewis L. Burritt Family in America : Descendants of William Burritt of Stratford, Connectucut, 1635-1940 gives the date I removed, 26 Dec 1733, but also says his wife was Anne Sherman. The purpose of the article was to identify Stephen's wife as Mary Dayton, as is shown on this page. But by showing it is not Anne Sherman, it pretty invalidates the date since that goes with Anne Sherman. There is no marriage record to Mary Dayton, or the cited article would not have been necessary, as the answer would be obvious from the marriage record. A record is found in Stratford, CT, on 26 Dec 1723, for Anne Sherman and "Stephen Buril" of New Haven. Barbour's compilation asks in parentheses "Burritt?". Obviously Orcutt decided this assumption was correct (it is not: the article says research into probate records shows it was Stephen Burwell). But Mr. Burritt's book mangled the date from 1723 to 1733, which inadvertently(?) made it fit this couple better (since no kids were born to Stephen until 1735). So nobody was married on 26 Dec 1733, and we don't know when Stephen Burritt married Mary Dayton, beyond what can be inferred from the birth of their first child. --Jrich 02:42, 16 October 2015 (UTC) |
