Family talk:Solomon Phipps and Hannah Pickard (1)

Danforth Genealogy says Hannah Packard but we can rule out Packard that since John Pickard's will names Solomon as a son.

Cutter says Rebecca and Sarah married Solomon Phipps and Thomas Hammond but can't choose. Sarah is named as Thomas Hammond's wife on her gravestone.

Every mention of Solomon Phipps' wife that I see gives her name as Hannah (marriage record, birth of son, death record). Is there a single piece of evidence that names his wife as Rebecca? I can only guess this is speculation based on there being another daughter Hannah, born in 1670.

Rebecca is named in her father's will of 1683 in the phrase "Rebecca, or her children". For over a decade before this will was written, Solomon Phipps' first wife was dead, as was her only child. Therefore, it appears Rebecca was still alive, and therefore not the wife of Solomon Phipps.

The Hannah Pickard who was born 1670 in Rowley was born after the death of Solomon Phipps first wife and so was a replacement daughter.

So Solomon Phipps first wife was named Hannah, and was an older daughter of John Pickard's. To be married in 1667 suggests birth by 1652 [meant 1649, to be 18]. There is a decent gap between Rebecca and Mary where she would easily fit. --Jrich 10:43, 12 December 2011 (EST)

Blodgette/Jewett, Early Settlers of Rowley, Massachusetts (1933 edition), p. 292, has Rebecca Pickard, b. 13:8:1645, marrying Solomon Phipps 13 Nov 1667 at Charlestown and dying there 1 Feb 1668; only one Hannah, b. 1670, is indicated. Those identifications had been made in the 1887 edition, but with less detail. Because the Charlestown VRs are closer to a primary source (and Roger Joslyn having done that work), the undocumented Hannah seems the most likely scenario.--jaques1724 12:00, 12 December 2011 (EST)
