I have figured out some of the puzzle. [add comment] [edit] Lewis Caddell and Mary Phillips Caddell household in 1880 in Denton, Texas, United States [18 August 2007]Ancestry image link: [1] Census for Lewis Caddell and Mary Phillips The big key is the 1880 census in Denton, Texas, United States. I hope that you have Ancestry; I have dial-up and uploading images is time consuming; but if you do not let me know, and I will upload them gradually. The household of Lewis Caddell is indexed Lewis Caddel. Dw.#231, Fam. #239:
I estimate they moved to Texas, United States in 1879. What is so interesting are the other clues provided on this census page. --Beth 10:11, 15 August 2007 (EDT) [add comment] [edit] Franklin Caddell and Manerva Phillips Caddell household in 1880 in Denton, Texas, United States [18 August 2007]
Note that Frank and parents' birth information are identical to Lewis's; and Manerva and Mary's are also identical. Suggests to me that possibly brothers Caddell married Phillips' sisters. Also Lewis Caddell's daughter Minnie was actually named Minerva. Checked on Ancestry for marriages in Etowah, Alabama, United States, same database as other marriages, Franklin Caddell married Minerva Phillips on 19 Nov 1876. --Beth 10:22, 15 August 2007 (EDT) [add comment] [edit] Amanda Caddell household in 1870 census in Etowah, Alabama, United States [18 August 2007]Ancestry Link: [2] Evidence from the 1870 census, head of household, Amanda Caddell, nee Amanda Tidmore, in Etowah, Alabama, United States supports the premise that Franklin Caddell and Lewis Caddell were brothers.
I conclude that Mahershalal-Hashbaz Caddell died sometimes after the 1860 census enumeration and before the 1870 enumeration. Also of interest on this census page is Dw.# 330 and Fam.#361. John Tidmore, age 65, born in South Carolina, United States; Minerva Tidmore, age 37, and Adam Tidmore, age 18. Other members in the household; just noting naming patterns. --Beth 11:07, 15 August 2007 (EDT) [add comment] [edit] Henry Phillips household in 1880 in Denton, Texas, United States [18 August 2007]Back to the 1880 census in Denton, Texas, United States for the rest of the interesting info on the same page; Dw# 230, Fam. #238:
Note that Henry, Adaline, Minerva and Mary Phillips all have the same birth information. Are they siblings? Minerva Phillips and Mary E. Phillips both married in Etowah, Alabama, United States. --Beth 11:27, 15 August 2007 (EDT) [add comment] [edit] Mary Phillips household in 1870 in Calhoun, Alabama, United States [18 August 2007]I had a devil of a time finding this information. Got sidetracked on looking for Mary Phillips in Pontotoc, Mississippi, United States and surrounding counties instead of concentrating on Etowah, Alabama, United States and neighboring counties. Mary Elizabeth Phillips may have been born in Pontotoc, there are a slew of Phillips families there but have not found this one. I finally found her in the 1870 census with the helpful information from the 1880 census in Denton. Mary Phillips is enumerated in Calhoun, Alabama, United States which adjoins Etowah County. Ancestry Link: [3]
I did not locate the brother of Adeline, Henry Phillips in the 1870 census. It is possible that the husband of Mary Phillips died in the service of the CSA and one might possibly find information from his service file; but giving her remarriage in the 1870's a pension application is unlikely. No success in finding this family in 1860 in my limited time allowed for searching. Note that Mary Phillips is born in South Carolina, United States and the children in Texas. This does not agree with the data in the 1880 census. The presumed mother Mary Phillips' birthplace is shown as Tennessee, United States in the 1880 census. --Beth 11:38, 15 August 2007 (EDT) [add comment] [edit] Mary Phillips Crenshaw and Garrison B. Crenshaw in the 1880 census in Turkeytown, Etowah, United States [18 August 2007]From the accumulated evidence it appears that the widowed mother of Mary Phillips married a widower named Garrison B. Crenshaw in Etowah, Alabama, United States. This probably accounts for the confusion of the descendant who said that the wife of Lewis Caddell was a Crenshaw. The two marriages in Etowah County are Mary Phillips (mother) to G. B. Crenshaw and Mary Phillips (daughter) to Lewis G. Caddell. In the 1880 census, Mary Crenshaw [was Phillips] is enumerated as the wife of Garretsen Crenshaw [indexed this way on Ancestry]. She is 49 years old and born in Tennessee. This is in Turkeytown in Etowah County, Alabama. This is the same location of the marriage of Mary E. Phillips to Lewis Caddell. No other Phillips children are in the household. Ancestry census link: [5] In 1860 he is indexed as Mohorsal Cadell in Cherokee County, Alabama. Etowah was formed from part of Cherokee and several other counties in 1868, so the Caddell family probably did not relocate in 1870. Lancaster [18 August 2007]A. H. Caddel [Andrew H. - enumerated in the 1860 household] married Francis R. Lancaster on 30 Dec 1869 in Etowah, Alabama, United States. [from the Ancestry database, Alabama Marriages, 1809-1920. This couple is enumerated immediately after the household of Amanda Tidmore, Amanda Caddell in the 1870 census.
