Family talk:Leuthard Ier de Paris and Grimhilde Unknown (1)

speculative [15 February 2016]

Why is Engeltrude called a specualative child? As far as you can be sure about Medieval times of course, FR wikipédia doesnot seem to have doubts.--Edwin 13:22, 14 February 2016 (UTC)

I guess she is called a “speculative child” because there is no direct evidence that Leuthard and Grimhilde are her parents. If you go to the Family Page attached to this page, and click on the source-link attached to the “Speculative Child” relationship, you can read Baldwin’s discussion of this. Baldwin regards the indirect evidence for this relationship as rather strong, and perhaps “probable” would be a better adjective than “speculative”. Unfortunately, I think Werelate does not make it easy for such distinctions to be made.
The “opinion” of French Wikipedia on this issue is irrelevant: it provides no source for the relationship -- just a general link to Cawley, whose treatment is much sketchier and less reliable than Baldwin’s. (For what it is worth, if you want to use Wikipedia, the Russian Wikipedia pages on this family are somewhat better sourced than the French ones.)
As for what to do with Engeltrude, use your judgement -- at least, I don’t have any strong feelings about it. (But then, I no longer actively contribute to WR and would rather keep to a minimum my involvement. My contributions to Werelate were made when I was completely new to medieval genealogy. It seems like ages ago, although I am really still a newb.)--Werebear 01:42, 15 February 2016 (UTC)

I try to use the speculative templates to mark relationships that are actively contemplated, while not yet generally accepted. I'm trying to represent the state of understanding among those who are actively engaged in the specifics of the genealogy (in the widest possible world, not just WR or any particular WP). I don't think I'm qualified to offer an opinion on my own.
I mean no offense, and I trust none has been taken. I feel this is a better way to represent an uncertain relationship. I encourage those who disagree, to do so... :) --jrm03063 17:30, 15 February 2016 (UTC)
