Family talk:Joseph Conkling and Unknown (2)

Source for dates? [3 February 2011]

It would be useful if you provided sources where you got your dates so I could tell if possibly you have already seen the following source. Compare the birth and death dates on this page to the Joseph below:

According to Town of Southold Index of 1698, p. 71, a Joseph Conkling b. 7 Aug 1691, d. 20 Jan 1740, s/o Joseph Conkling and Abigail Tuthill, m. (1) Ealse (Alice) ----, m. (2) widow Lydia Griffing. Will mentions wife Lydia, sons Joseph and Benjamin, daughters Abigail and Desire. The son Joseph probably m. Sarah Wickham. The daughter Desire probably married John Conkling, s/o Jacob, which could cause Desire's husband John and the younger Joseph to refer to each other as brothers. The father Joseph has a brother named John. No mention of a Joshua for either of Joseph. No mention of migration to New Jersey. Images from this book are online at [1].

There are 7 Joseph Conkling mentioned in the Town of Southold Index. The one you are describing seems to match #162: "Conkling, Joseph (jun. in 1698, first son of No. 161 [161 is Conkling, Joseph prob. m. Mary ----], b. 1692, D. Capt. 20 Jan., 1739/40; buried at H."

However that same death date is applied to #165 Lieut. Joseph Conkling as mentioned above. As this second case is also shown in the Salmon Records, this death date is probably incorrectly applied to #162. Capt. Joseph Conking is the son of Lieut. Joseph Conkling #165, so perhaps all the ranks floating around suggests why what looks to be one death got applied to two different people.

Discounting the recorded death and the title of Capt., the #162 entry then has virtually no detail, and does appear to be the most likely one to have gone to New Jersey and fathered your Conkling brothers in the 1720's. However, there is also another Joseph Conkling, the son of John Conkling (#146), born before 1698, mentions in his father's will of 1706, for which there is no other detail given.

The book, The Conklings in America, by Ira B. Conkling, describes a Benjamin Conkling, s/o Ananias Conkling, who moved to Elizabeth,NJ in 1666, but returned to East Hampton, Long Island in 1671. He died in 1709. He could have left his land in Elizabeth to one of his sons, and the ages are such that the Joseph who fathered your brothers in 1720's could have been a grandson of this Benjamin. Ananias was the brother of the very first John Conkling who came to Southold, so this branch does not descend from any of the people in the Town of Southold Index.

I have looked into the families of Joseph Conkling and Abigail Tuthill, m. (1) Ealse (Alice) ----, m. (2) widow Lydia Griffing. Will mentions wife Lydia, sons Joseph and Benjamin. Also looked at the son Joseph who did marry Sarah Wickham. These families stayed on Long Island and no relationship with Joseph Conkling of Elizabeth NJ has been found. Your other thoughts definitely bear further thought Thanks for the comments!-- Sheri--Sheri 18:51, 22 February 2009 (EST)

Y-DNA was submitted by a descendant of Joseph Conkling (b. 1729) of Elizabeth New Jersey and a descendant of Joshua Conkling (b.1727) of Elizabeth New Jersey. The DNA testing strongly supports that Joseph and Joshua were brothers or first cousins. Only one marker for the two is one number off. This was marker DYS464e which was 17 for Joseph's descendant and 18 for Joshua's descendant. Comparison with the Y-DNA of these two Conklin men and Y-DNA of about 12 other Conklin men strongly suggest that both of these men and the other men in the study are descendants of John Conklin of Rye or the pre-1700 Westchester NY Conklins. Results of the DNA study and collateral information provided by the members of the study point to Nicholas or John Conklin, both sons of John of Rye as the ancestor of each participant’s line.--Sheri 19:26, 2 February 2011 (EST)
