Marriage more like 1711 [13 November 2009]

The two marriage dates shown on this page, 1714, and 25 Mar 1715 in Concord, are both too late, there being at least two children born before these dates. Source:Nourse, Henry Stedman. Birth, Marriage, and Death Register, Church Records and Epitaphs of Lancaster, Massachusetts, 1643-1850, p. 274: 1712. July 27. Mary Wheeler Wife of Jonathan Wheeler owned ye Convenant and had her Daughter baptized, Mary. This apparently being the eldest, suggests a marriage in 1711 or before. There is no record of this marriage in Source:Concord, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States. Births, Marriages, and Deaths, 1635-1850. --Jrich 00:35, 12 November 2009 (EST)

Jrich, that seems like a reasonable enough source to go ahead and change the marriage date on the family page, citing that source as reasoning. Jillaine 17:26, 12 November 2009 (EST)
If there had just been 1714, i.e., an imprecise date, I would have, but when you see a date like 25 Mar 1715, it usually has some basis. Perhaps there are two Jonathan Wheelers. I was hoping to find out where that date came from. Also, it's not like I have a date to provide, just a boundary... --Jrich 18:56, 12 November 2009 (EST)

I went looking for the source of the 25 March 1715 date; what I found so far is a mess:

  • Ancestors of Hattie Louise Hildreth c. 2005, personal genealogy site without source citations. Claims that Mary Fletcher married John Wheeler, born 15 August 1695 in Marlborough, Middlesex, MA; died 1747 in Boston, Suffolk, MA. Note that the birth date is different, but the death year (but not place) the same.
Source:Marlborough, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States. Vital Records of Marlborough, Massachusetts, to the End of the Year 1849, p. 324, Wheler, John and Mary Hapgood, Oct. 8, 1717.. Also, Mary's father's probate documents mention Jonathan Wheeler. See Family:Samuel Fletcher and Hannah Wheeler (2). --Jrich 11:03, 13 November 2009 (EST)
  • 1710: Yates Publishing. U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: The Generations Network, Inc., 2004. Original data: This unique collection of records was extracted from a variety of sources including family group sheets and electronic databases. Originally, the information was derived from an array of materials including pedigree charts, family history articles, queries. NOTE: Others say he married Hannah Russell in 1710. Some say she was the mother of all his children, and that he m. Mary Fletcher later; still others say he married Mary F first.
  • no date, but not Mary Fletcher at all but Hannah Russell only: The Wheeler Families of Old Concord.
  • no date, only Mary _____: "4715 JONATHAN WHEELER son of Obadiah 4707 and Elizabeth White Wheeler Born at Concord Mass July 28 1683 died about 1747 Married Mary who died Feb 19 1738 9 children." From The genealogical and encyclopedic history of the Wheeler family p 355. (On Google)
  • 1709 in Lancaster!

I nodded off last night while researching this. I'll try to get back to it later, but have guests coming this weekend.

I was similarly engaged last night.

In Source:Concord, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States. Births, Marriages, and Deaths, 1635-1850, p. 76, 78:
Jonathan Wheeler & Hanah Russel were married both of Concord by ye revrend Joseph Eastabrook Agust ye 29 : 1710
Abraham Wheeler ye Son of Johnathan Wheeler and Hanah his wife was born September ye 29 : 1711

From Source:Nourse, Henry Stedman. Birth, Marriage, and Death Register, Church Records and Epitaphs of Lancaster, Massachusetts, 1643-1850:
p. 16: Abraham Wheeler, son of Richard, aged thirty-six years, killed by Indians November ?, 1695. Inventory dated November 6.
p. 274: 1712. July 27. Mary Wheeler Wife of Jonathan Wheeler owned ye Convenant and had her Daughter batpized Mary.
p. 274: 1713 May 24. Hannah also the Daughter of Jonathan Wheeler.
p. 275: 1717 May 26. ...also Obediah Son of Jonathan Wheeler.
p. 277: 1720 Aug. 20. Baptized Jonathan Wheeler's child at Shrewsbury...

From Source:Shrewsbury, Worcester, Massachusetts, United States. Vital Records of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, to the End of the Year 1849
p. 108: Wheeler, Jonathan, s. Jonathan and Mary, June 22, 1720.

From Source:Rowley, Essex, Massachusetts, United States. Vital Records of Rowley, Massachusetts, to the End of the Year 1849
p. 425: Wheeler, Jonathan and Ann Plumer, Nov. 15, 1710
p. 229: Wheeler, Benjamin, s. Jonathan and Ann, [born] Sept. 25, 1711. and others after this date.

The last Jonathan can be ruled out, but I investigated him a little just because Ann and Hannah were sometimes used interchangably.

My guess is the Lancaster and Concord records show two different Jonathans? Could Hannah have died as a result of childbirth in Sept. 1711 and Jonathan remarried and had a daughter by July 1712? It is barely enough time (10 months) to deal with publishment and 9 months of pregnancy with no slack for mourning or anything else, but I think most times it seemed usual to see about a year of mourning, so I doubt that is what happened. On the other hand, where did Jonathan and Hannah go if she didn't die?

Based on names of children, one might guess that Abraham of Lancaster had a son named Jonathan who married in Concord Hannah Russell. (I don't even know if Abraham married, usually when the death record describes him as son of his father, he is unmarried, and I haven't found any record of his birth.) Then Obadiah of Concord had a son Jonathan who had a wife named Mary in Lancaster. --Jrich 09:39, 13 November 2009 (EST)

Source:Wheeler, Albert Gallatin. Genealogical and Encyclopedic History of the Wheeler Family in America, p. 498, says the Abraham of Lancaster married Tabitha --- and had Abigail, Samuel, Jonathan, and an unidentified daughter. In an entry oddly bereft of any details, it says the son Jonathan had children (p. 500): Oliver, Jonathan, Jerathmeel, Hannah, Sarah, Mary, Sampson, Simon, Simon (again), Tabitha, and Abraham. No wife is mentioned, no town, no death date, no married names of children, no births of children. I am having a hard time imagining how the author came across this list without having at least some other details. But I think it is not inconsistent with the above proposal. --Jrich 11:44, 13 November 2009 (EST)

Summary of Current Theory = [13 November 2009]

JRich, I like your theory, too. Let me feed it back to you in summary form, to see if I'm following you, and to draft something we might put on the appropriate pages.

Well, presumably Russell would be her second husband's surname, but I think I misread the Wheeler Families of Old Concord, and I'm not sure she was ever Tabitha Russell. Additionally, I think the website's mention of Tabitha Russell as Jonathan's second wife is totally a mistake as well (see NEHGR 56:242-3). So I'm not sure any Tabitha Russell is involved at all. Abraham's wife was Tabitha, as shown by probate docs, but I think that is the best that can be said based on what I have found.
The first four are the children of Abraham and Tabitha Wheeler. Jonathan was a son of Abraham. Previously, the list made them all look like children of Jonathan, so I fixed this. --Jrich 14:31, 13 November 2009 (EST)

Jonathan Wheeler, son of Abraham

  • Abraham Wheeler of Lancaster m. Tabitha prob. Russell [is this her maiden name or was she a widow?], and had:

    • Mary
    • Sampson
    • Simon1
    • Simon2

    • Abraham b. 1711 Concord

Jonathan Wheeler, son of Obadiah

  • Obadiah Wheeler of Concord m. Elizabeth White and had:
    • Jonathan Wheeler Concord b. 1683 [follows next]
    • other children not specified
  • Jonathan Wheeler m abt 1711 in Lancaster Mary Fletcher and had:
    • Mary bapt 1712 in Lancaster
    • Hannah 1713 in Lancaster
    • Obadiah 1717 in Lancaster
