Possible duplicate [5 February 2014]
Family:Andrew Cowan and Mary Walker (3) is a possible duplicate of this family. Mary Walker is the same person.--Beth 23:09, 26 September 2011 (EDT)
- Hi Beth. Its possible they are the same person. Certainly the wife is the same person---at least as far as the lineage goes on the respective pages. The problem here is that we don't know if the Andrew Cowan is really the same person. Could be. Might not be. There are at least two candidates for this Andrew Cowan---one in Jefferson County TN, and the other in SW VA. They are often thought to be the same person, but we know from original source documentation that the one in TN died in the 1790's, while the one in SW VA lived on well into the 1800's.
- The problem here is that genealogists identify both as the husband of Mary Walker dau of John Walker and Ann Houston. The one in SW VA probably did mary Mary dau of John and Ann (John Walker and his family lived nearby), but direct proof of that is absent. The one in TN is believed to have married twice, the first time to Mary Walker. Again, documentation of that marriage is lacking, though its widely believed to be true. personally, I doubt that his first wife was "Mary Walker". I think that particular identification is based on the belief that Andrew of TN is the same person as Andrew of SW VA. Since that view can be shown to be in error, its unlikely that his first wife was "Mary Walker". Might still could be "Mary" last name unknown, but I've no evidence to support that either.
- So, since I don't know for sure which world view is correct, I've left them both the way they are, and hopefully, we'll eventually have the data to eliminate some of the confusions. In the meantime, I still don't know that the Andrew Cowan in Augusta County is the same person as the ones who show up either in Tn or SW VA. Likely he's the one in SW VA, but I don't know. - The note left by Q above reflects a previous state of this page, in which Andrew's wife Mary (surname unknown) was given as Mary Walker (which is why he says that the wife is the same person). If Andrew Cowan (20) of Beverly's Manor, who lived in Augusta County as early as 1746 and who is mentioned in Augusta County with his wife Mary in 1778 (this family), is the same person as Andrew Cowan (6) of Washington County, Virginia, who married Mary Walker, then this family is the same as Andrew Cowan and Mary Walker (1). However, while the evidence seems to point in this direction, it is not certain that they were the same person.
