1870 Census

William Swain, 26 and a seaman, born in Maine, lives in Ward 7 of Bath, Sagadahoc, Maine, in the home of his in-laws, John and Lavina Harrison. His wife, Lena, is 25. They have a daughter Orrie St. C Swain, 11 months old (born July 1869). All family members are identified as "black" by the census taker.

1900 Census

William Swain, 57 and a master mariner, owns a home at 73 Chester Ave, Chelsea, Suffolk, Massachusetts. He was born in Mar, 1843. His wife, Lena, is 55 and was born in Nov. 1844. They have been married 33 years and have three children, all living. Oraville S Swain, born July 1869 (age 30), is a forewoman at a "silkwaist" factory. Florence O. M. Swain, born June 1879 (age 20), is a stenographer. Frank W Swain, born Nov 1880 (age 19), is a "Gypsy Moth laborer," who was unemployed for six months. All family members are noted as "black" by the census taker, and all were born in Maine.
