Mary was born out of wedlock and William Runciman refused to take with the child. The matter was in front of the Crail Kirk Session over several months both preceding and following the December 1764 birth. The process was halted by the untimely drowning of William in January 1765, 'at the mouth of the harbour whilst going afishing'
